Having recently experienced usage issues with my Yakima Swing Daddy, the company decided to warranty my four year old unit with a new Full Swing unit. This turned out to be a worse product because with four bikes on it the rack seriously sagged to the right when swung out. After another swap, they game me the Full Tilt 5 (a 5-bike tilt-away carrier) which is a nice rack except for a stupid piece of metal that serves no purpose yet protrudes one inch downward. Because of it I hit the driveway apron even with no bikes attached and no load in the vehicle. I am shopping around for a hitch riser to elevate the rack but due to mixed reviews of various products I'm not sure what works with an Odyssey that the bumper won't interfere with. E-trailer sells a Curt ball mount receiver extension combo with a raised 2" hitch (TW rated for 750 lb) but I am looking for something like that without the extra ball mount.
I ended up buying the Roadmaster 048-6 which is a 6" riser. For some reason e-trailer.com does not recommend this for anything other than towing even though it has a TW rating of 400. I contacted Roadmaster directly and they told me that I definitely could use it for a bike rack as long as I don't exceed the TW. Now all I have to do is weigh the bikes (using my luggage scale) and see if I'm under 400 (including the rack).
What is the tongue weight rating for your hitch receiver? If it's less than 400lbs, you're going to want to shoot to stay under that limit. Mine is only 350lbs.
Surprisingly its only 350, I would have expected more from a Class III.
What does an average adult mountain bike weigh? Probably 30-50lbs max
Let's assume 50 lbs max, and since only two of my five bikes are adult bikes that would put me at 250 lbs max bike weight worst case scenario.
The rack weighs 42 lbs I think so that added to the total bike weight easily falls within the TW of the hitch receiver and the riser.
Actually not that surprising. It's class 3 because of its higher rating when used with a weight distribution system. Ya, I can't imagine 5 modern bikes weighing more than 250lbs. Sounds like you're all set. Happy biking.
