Corner Subwoofer Install

I know that this has been shown here before, but I was bored this weekend and thought I would throw in my two-cents worth and show the sub box that I built. The whole thing was pretty easy to build and believe it or not the single 10" JBL sounds great. Hopefully all images come through. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

Looks awesome. Nice job. I wish we had something like that for our Ody. I'm sure that single 10 sounds much better than the factory sub. Do you have the 'instructions' for building it?

Sorry, I don't really have any instructions for it. I just measured it out, cut the wood and threw it together. I guess if I sit down, I could probably give you rough estimates. There are many different ways this box can be made, just look at some other examples. Thanks for the feedback.

By the way I believe the volume of the box is around .75cu/ft

What a sharp looking install. I assume that you made it from some MDO plywood, glue, screws and caulk. What about sound deadening insulation to eliminate "boominess?"

I'm new enough to Ody's that I am not sure where you installed it. Is it behind the third seat where the headrests are stored when not in use?

Also, with my newness to Ody's, does my 2001 EX have a factory woofer? If so, where is it? I would love to add something similar if it could be added to the OEM head unit. I just installed a pair of Kenwood 1666 speakers in the front doors and they made a huge difference in the sound. I know that the addition of a woofer would add another big boost.

You got it right, I used some MDF(1/2in), screws, glue and caulk. The sub is installed in the corner where the head rests would normally be stored. Just wasted space in my opinion. For the "Boominess", I used some stuffing material from a fabric store and put it inside the box to help out. It would be even a better idea to add some Dynamat behind the sub on the bare metal. Something I might do in the future. But it stills sounds great without anything at all. On the other subject, if u have a factory sub, it would be located under the driver's seat. As far as I know, those are not very good subs. I am in the same boat as u and tapped into the factory head unit to get the inputs for the sub. I was not willing to give up my head unit with all the controls for the DVD, changer, ETC. Hope this helps out.

I feel the same way about the OEM head unit and its ability to control things.

What I would like to know is how to make the connection to the head unit. Did you have to open it up and tap a circuit board inside, or is it a connection that is readily available on the back of the unit.

With my experience in speaker cabinet building over the years, I would have no problem creating a box similar to yours. By the way, what did you cover it with? Is it vinyl to match the Ody's interior, or did you just find a close match at an upholstery shop?

As you can see, I am very interested in pursuing this project sometime during the winter when I can comfortably work in my shop. (I am in AZ)
