If you just bought a used 2nd generation Ody.....

....that is around 10 years old and everything on it is stock (in other words, there have been no modifications to it such as tranny cooler, etc...), what things do you think should be done immediately to prevent a major breakdown and make sure it lasts you many years plus get maximum fuel economy? Of course the obvious is to add a tranny cooler and a magnifine filter, but what other preventive maintenance would you do to it? Airlift 1000's? Check the timing belt? I look forward to your insight.

Besides tranny service, I would check and do if needed all the scheduled maintenance assuming the van was neglected from the previous owner even if a service receive is provided. For example, even I was told the spark plugs had been recently replaced, I would still take one out in making sure the job is done right and using recommended brand. Another is replacing all the fluid and oil with synthetic. Not only a 10 yrs old Odyssey, I would do the routine on all used car I purchased.

You didn't specify the year or miles, but maybe check the EGR ports. If they are plugged with carbon, fuel mileage will be low. 2002+ have a cover so you can check the ports in a few minutes.

Mine is a 2002 with 165,000 miles. The tranny was rebuilt 25,000 miles ago and they added a tranny cooler at that time. I did go ahead and do 4 tranny fluid changes to make sure it was running the Honda DW1 synthetic. The timing belt was done at 105,000 but I did replace the spark plugs. I also popped the top off and cleaned the carbon out of the EGR ports. Any other suggesstions?

Brake fluid flush every 3-4 years.
Cabin air filter replacement every 2-3 years.
Power steering fluid drain and fill (turkey baster method is sufficient) every 5-7 years.
    Battery every 5 years.
    Air filter every 30K miles.
Thermostat replaced when coolant changed at timing belt service. No need to upgrade to hotter one if you are from KY.
Clean and lube the 3 sets of sliding door tracks. I use a toothbrush (used of course ) to apply multi purpose grease to the tracks and rollers - I do this in spring and fall.
Lube hood, door and hatch hinges and latches with lithium grease.
    Silicone spray the rubber weatherstripping.
These timelines mentioined are just guidelines and not cast in stone.

I have not cleaned and/or lubed my sliding door tracks. What brand of grease do you use NDNV for the sliding door track maintenance?
When I use this smilie ===> I am NOT calling you stupid.

The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.

Great topic. I just bought a 2002 Ody with 74K on it. So far have done a 3X drain and fill (the fluid was black and thick, not good). I am also going to change the AT filter. For some reason, and I don't know what it is, the dealers will tell you there is not a filter. But there is and there is a really nice video on youtube about how to install it. It does not look too hard. The other things I want to do you have already mentioned with cleaning the EGR ports and putting in an in-line magnifine and a transmission cooler.

Oh also forgot, I am seeing where a lot of people are saying to clean the screen on the shifter and linear selonoids. If anyone has a video or still pictures for working on this stuff, please post.

I got the tube of multipurpose grease (beige colour) which must have been meant for heavy truck bearings or such from a salesrep at a trade show. I would fit in a grease gun. It reminds me of peanut butter

It will attract dirt over time so I do it often. Clean tracks and area well first then apply to tracks, rollers and especially the curve in the middle track. This is on a 2001.

This has worked for me over the years and I have not had to replace a roller. Makes it easier for the kids to open and close the manual sliding doors too.

Here is a video of filter replacement that you can watch and get comfortable with before jump into it. I'll still add an inline magnifine and cooler.

Welcome to the board and hope this helps,

    Thanks Bruce

Thanks Bruce, much appreciated. I am going to tackle this next week. When I buy the magnefine filter, what size do I get? I think they come in 3 sizes depending on the diameter of the return hose to the transmission. Thanks, Scott

You are welcome. 3/8" Magnefine. If you decided to install a cooler while you are at it, I recommend the B&M 70268 SuperCooler which comes with everything your need for mounting and connection. Here is info shows pretty much everything you need to know for the installation: http://www.handa-accessories.com/odyssey/odyatf.pdf

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thank you so much, do you have anything on how to get to those solenoid screens? Everything I see on these forums seem to have expired.

Thanks bruce for that AT filter video. Still, I have a lingering question. If the Honda filter has a bypass, as I believe it does, then why go to the trouble of replacing it if one installs a Magnefine as a superior filtering alternative? It would be one thing if the Honda filter was easy to replace like an oil filter. But it is anything but simple and involves a few potentially dangerous pitfalls like maybe getting an o-ring installed in a cockeyed fashion or messing up one of the wiring harnesses.
