    Odds of Transmission Failure

Ok, we have a 2001 Odyssey with 101,000 miles. We purchased it used with about 78,000 miles. I now see from this forum that the 99-01 Odyssey's have an increased chance of transmission failure. It still has the original transmission, and there is no indication of transmission issues except one.

A few months back, the Check Engine and TCS light came on. The EGR valve needed to be cleaned and all is well now. However, when they reset the Check Engine light they mentioned that there was a code that indicated a transmission issue. It wasn't enought to set the Check Engine light, but it was there.

We are tempted to trade in our 01 Odyssey and purchase an 04+ Odyssey or a Sienna.

So, what are the REAL odds of a transmission failure ? Thanks!

    Extended Warranty

Yes, I did see from searches that there is an extended warranty to 109K or 7yr9mo, but I need to make a decision prior to warranty expiration.

By the way, when does the 7yr9mo clock start?

Actually, if it would fail prior to warranty expiration, I could have it replaced under the warranty, and keep the 01!

    Thanks!

To my knowledge Honda has not published this data.

FWIW, my '01 Ody did not throw codes or idiot lights, but wife said it "seemed a little strange". I don't drive it regularly but took it for a drive and was not able to detect what my wife had detected -- even her along for ride saying "There, that's it. Is that normal?" To err on the prudent side, I took it to the dealer and he pronounced we needed a new tranny. This was at 99k and under warranty.

Do you have anything to lose by letting your dealer look it over?

If you have a "good" '01 tranny, I'm not sure if you'd be getting a better "insurance policy" with an '04, but the premium would surely be higher. IMO you are money ahead with the '01, but if you can't sleep at night, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

    Warranty Length

What is the actual transmission warranty length? I have seen numerous posts that indicate it is 109,000, but TSB 02-062 indicates it is only 100,000 miles. Thanks.

    Warranty Length

Ok, I may be able to answer this myself. After a bit, well really a bunch, of searching, it looks like the original warranty extension to 100,000 was extended out to 109,000 by a class action lawsuit. The following site contains detailed information and a VIN verification. My VIN is included! That will buy me a bit of time.

    Thanks!

More food for thought is even after the 109,000 miles, Honda has been known to provide goodwill assistance to the 1999-2001 owners in particular. The 2002-2004 Odysseys do not have an official Extended Warranty on the transmission and rely solely on goodwill consideration and usually have to pay the labour to install the transmissions.

Based on my unscientific calculations, you have 100% chance of transmission failure. I just can't tell you at what mileage.
For Sale: Reliable '00 EX, 140k mi, well maintained always with Honda replacement parts, changed fluids regularly (engine oil, transmission oil, coolant), passenger sliding door not latching since 80k, new tranny at 94k, Michelin X-Radials at 105k, 105k-mile service (all fluids, timing belt, ac belt, ps belt, tstat, h2o pump, coolant, air filter, cabin filter, and spark plugs -- all Honda parts), Honda brake light switch replaced at 123k, 2 Honda ignition coils replaced at 140k, a/c not working since 135k

You should get the dealer to note down the transmission issue in writing. When it fails later, tell them that the transmission issue started before the warranty expiration...

Why do I qualify as a moron?

I really don't understand your statement about my qualifications as a moron because I visit this site and happen to be interested in Ody transmissions.
