will P0420 code fail ca smog emmissions?

ok i did research on the P0420 code but it doesnt say anything about failing california smog emmissions.

i just bought the van as is and the previous original owner told me nothing and we agreed on me taking care or the smog check.

so i cleared the code with obd2 reader and what im am trying to get at is will my van fail emissions even if i clear the code before i take it to smog?

If the CA emission is anything like TX, it will fail. Once the code is reset, the vehicle computer goes into an open loop and "not ready" state. It takes a little driving time or mileage before computer is in close loop and all systems are in a "ready" state, namely : EGR, Catalyic Converter, O2 sensors, EVAP system, etc.

If the problem still exists then the vehicle computer will trigger the P0420 code or what ever code for the failed system.

    What year is the van?

For 2000 and earlier, you can have up to two sensors NOT READY and still pass the inspection.

For 2001 you can have only one sensor NOT READY and still pass the inspection.

For 2002, I do not know but I think you are still allowed one NR but you need to do more research.

In all cases, if the check engine light is ON, you automatically fail the emission test.

It is very delicate balance to get all but 2 (or 1) sensors READY but still NOT have the CEL on. As you drive, the sensors start transitioning from NOT READY to READY. But if the van decides to check for CAT converter efficiency, it might turn on the CEL before many of the other sensors can successfully finish. If you can avoid getting on the highway, the CAT converter test would be deferred. That test runs when you let off the gas at steady highway speed. If you drive like maniac, (full throttle/full brakes) the CAT converter test will not run. If you can manage to drive your van to the station with that condition, you can get sticker.

Unless you have your own code reader which can give you the state of IM readiness sensors, don't even bother with the above.
