    Knocking...rattling....noise.....at cold startup.....help!!!!

    2005 EX-L w RES

We started hearing a loud rattling or knocking noise coming from the bottom of the engine bay area immediately after starting up the car. The noise slowly fades away as the car warms up. It is the loudest immediately after starting up the car and then the noise goes away after 3~4 minutes of leaving the car running. I can't tell if the noise is coming from the engine or exhaust.

This problem started during on our road trip. We were driving back and forth to Las Vegas from L.A. and Grand Canyon. We started hearing the noise one morning and has never stopped. Once the noise goes away we don't hear anything until the next morning we start the car again. When driving the car we don't feel or hear anything strange. It only happens for just a few minutes after starting the car cold. Any idea? Do you think the noise is coming from the engine or exhaust system?

Hard to diagnose through the internet but if it is a knocking sound (as opposed to a rattle) it's unlikely to be the exhaust.

Sounds like you need a trip to the dealer.

Had a 2005 Cdn Silver Touring. They were super hot when they first came out but I managed exactly 14 days from purchase to shipment to dealership. Picked up Monday Dec 6,2004. Newmarket Honda told me no earlier than late january and they were floored when I showed up with it for service late Dec.

Always check the BASIC stuff first:

    1. Open the hood and check all fluids. Maybe the engine oil level is low???

    2. Check for any obvious loose parts.

    3. Then best is to drive the van up a wood ramp (I posted info on wood ramps in the Engine Oil DIY thread), and check the undercarriage.

My guess is some loose (or broken) engine mounts?

My guess would be a lower bearing. If the noise goes away when the vehicle warms up, I wouldn't think it would be a mount. I'd also start by checking the oil, but if you have an engine knock, there will be engine damage. Even if the oil level is OK, you could have a bad oil pump that doesn't work properly when the oil is cold. Good luck and let us know what the dealer says.

    Jena,

Any resolution to the problem? Im having the same issue with my 2007. The rattling it pretty significant and my issue is exactly as you described. It sound like it is in the engine bay near the pulleys.

Did you look into TSB 07-028?

Thank you CNN and New Dad. This rattling is giving me stress that it can be a internal engine issue. I hope I did not make a bad decision.

The TSB shows for my Odyssey 2007 EXL below.

    From VIN 5FNRL3...7B000001
    thru 5FNRL3...7B007592

    From VIN 5FNRL3...7B400001
    thru 5FNRL3...7B405900

My VIN 5FNRL3863B441660...it appears not to be in their list for this TSB. However, Im still going to look at that heatshield this weekend if loose and see if I can validate torque. I will also inspect all the engine mounts for torque, cracks and wear and tear. Im thinking more heat shield though. I will pump super and add gas additive just for grins. The problem goes away when the engine is warmed up and I do not hear it under light acceleration and it does not squeal. I can hear it on the passenger side under the pulleys. Not sure if this is the location of the heat shield. Im not that familiar with this engine..yet.

Thanks CNN for the TSB and NewDad for the engine mount suggestion.

Build yourself a set of wood ramps (qty=2) using 2x10 lumber.
Use wood screws to screw the pieces together.
This will allow you to drive the van up and down for quick inspection.

Go to Home Depot and they will cut the lumber to lengths you want.
The cost is about $10-15 for the lumber needed to build both ramps (I have had these wood ramps now for 15 years).

You see the pics of the wood ramps here in the DIY Oil Change that I wrote a while ago:

If you need the exact measurement of the wood (3 layers + the "stopper" at the end), then here it is:

Please help me troubleshoot rattling in engine bay

Does it sound like the noise in the above video clip? Mine makes the same noise - 2006 EX-L with about 92,000 miles and the noise is completley gone when things warm up. I changed the serpentine accessory belt, and it did not help. Power steering reservoir is new and have recently replaced the rear motor mount that was shot.

All things are pointing to the hydraulic tensioner for the timing belt. We are close to the 100K mile mark and might have the timing belt changed before Christmas (along with the tensioner and water pump).

Anybody have any resolution on this issue? 07EXL here and I discovered this on my wife's car last night. Started it up, noticed a weird rattling - after I drove off it went away and did not reoccur when we made stops and restarted the engine after it sat for a while. Driveability is completely unaffected. Recently I did a tranny drain and fill - hat tip to cnn for the wood ramps idea, I like it a lot.
