    A/C replacement

So I just got the wonderful news that my a/c compressor had completely seized yesterday and that needs to be replaced along with the clutch, coil, filter bay canister and then they do a evac recharge. When the pump seized it evidently created some nasty problems.

Anyway, the estimate I received was 1400 for the full job. I have no idea if this is way too high or not so just was curious. It is more than a simple replacement of the compressor but beyond that...I'm just not that familiar with the process. Of course I don't have any other options right now and I know this dealer normally prices about normal for dealers anyway.

    Thanks for any info

The stuff you named except for the coil are all normally replaced - the dryer is the cannister. Sometimes a bad compressor on older hondas would mean that the ENTIRE system had to be replaced including all lines as it would circulate stuff through the system. Price I'm not sure, but likely OK. you can phone another garage and see what their rate for the same work would be.

    - What are the symptoms: no AC?

    - Get a 2nd opinion, preferably at a Honda Indy shop.

    - I can tell you my experience:
    * Ac went out while on vacation.
    * Turned out the AC Clutch was bad after 3yr/38K miles, right after warranty expired.
    * Parts + Labor = $600, good will warranty comes in: I paid $300.

I posted all in in this thread, you may want to read it. Your problem may be just the 2 parts I mentioned in this thread:

    38900-RGM-A01...CLUTCH SET....$130 online
    38924-RGL-A01...STATOR SET....$58 online

    Air has stopped blowing cold

    PS:
    - Best is to check AC R134a charge, if still good then AC compressor is probably OK.
    - Then jump the AC Clutch Relay, if Clutch does not engage then AC Clutch is bad.
    - Replace both those parts above.

Symptoms were actually much worse...some rather strange and frightening noises, engine nearly stopping (idling), white smoke coming from front of hood. Essentially the compressor pump seized up and then the freon was sort of expelled. From my limited knowledge and a few others I talked to, it seemed pretty evident that the pump died.

Hmmm...so $1400 later and the van does the same thing (only worse) 3 miles from the dealership. This should be fun.

99' Oddy 304,000 miles same tranny with Hayden trans cooler/ All recalls taken care of as they came out, cleaned my EGR and ports myself a couple of months ago to my surprise previous owner never had the Teflon tube thing done, purchased van in 2004 had 189,000 on it then. but well taken care of then and now
05' Oddy 150,000 bought it in June of 08 already had 92,000 miles on it. Use strait water in summer on both vans and coolant in the winter.

A few days ago, the a/c on my 70k, 06 Ody suddenly started discharging warm air as I was driving down the freeway. Actually, it was 93 degree air since that was the outside air temp at the time here in Salt Lake City. I shut the a/c off and at my first opportunity, pulled into a parking lot to check it out. As soon as I opened the door, I could smell a putrid, burning rubber-like odor and when I popped the hood, the remanents of white smoke could be seen coming from the compressor area. I took a closer look at the compressor and could see a melted substance that had oozed from between the clutch and the surrounding pulley.

I took it into my normal Honda shop and they said the compressor had failed in such a way that they needed to replace the entire a/c system. Fortunately, I bought the 8 year, 120k (125k now thanks to the speedometer class-action suit a few years ago) Honda Care warranty and it is expected to pick up the quoted $2500 repair bill. I say, "expected" because I won't know for sure until tomorrow when they submit the details to Honda for their evaluation and judgement.

Based on my conversations with the dealer so far, I'm pretty sure they know that I'll come unglued if the Honda Care doesn't pick up the tab. More to follow...

"Black Death" is an issue seen mostly in Honda CRV models, but not Odyssey.

Keep us posted. Keep the old parts and take some pictures and post them later.

My service advisor informed me today that the entire a/c system replacement will be covered by my Honda Care, to include a rental car. Some parts had to be ordered from Honda and are expected to be in tomorrow. Since the projected labor time is 12.7 hours, I don't expect to pick my Ody up until after work on Wednesday.

I'll ask for the old parts and will take and post pics.

The $1231 I paid in 2006 for my Honda Care is turning out to be money very well spent. And to think I still have another 55K left!

Well, after 4 days of my Ody being in the shop, I finally got it back yesterday. Because the repair was covered by Honda Care, they wanted to send the parts back to Honda so I didn't get to retain them. They were already in their shipping boxes and had been cleaned up so they all looked pretty nondescript. The melted goo coming out from between the clutch and the pulley was no longer present and none of the other parts showed any visible signs of damage or contamination so I didn't take any pics. I did, however, take pics of my invoice showing all the "no-charges" for the job. It felt pretty good getting out of there without having to pay anything for such a big job.
