06 ODY EXL RES NAV Front wheel bearing question

Hello Masters & happy 2013 to all members.

I'm having a terrible noise from the front passenger side of my 06 EXL ODY for a bout a week now. When the windows are down I hear like a metalic sound (cling, cling sound), but when I raise my windows I hear a rubbing sound (wooo wooo wooo sound), the more I speed up, the more the rubbing sound.

I have recently replaced my links, front struts, sway bar bushings & front knucles bushings with pure OEM parts. My tires are brand new as well & they are not rubbing against the spalsh guards nor the struts structure.

I am 100% sure the sound I'm hearing is a bad front bearing on the drivers side.

Downhere in Panama (Central America), the Honda Dealer is charging me $135 bucks for each front bearing. We all know Honda does not fabricate bearings. The OEM part number is 44300-SHJ-A51 & we all know that this is a special bearing that has a magnet on it. The brand of this bearings is SKF & all the Dealer does is put it in a plastic & a box labeled Honda to raise the cost per unit.

On Ebay you can find the OEM bearings for about 80 bucks a piece but it doesn't work for me because with the shipping costs to my country it would end up costing the same or a bit more than the dealer.

Looking on the net I have found some replacement bearings from NTN, Timeken & a few more.

I have found some very cheap bearings from DTF on ebay at aproximately 18 bucks a piece. They match the year and model of my 06 ODY. They even have a special of 34 bucks for the 2 front bearings.

I was considering ordering them and replace also the front hubs with OEM even tough my mechanic advised that it's not an obligation to replace the hubs, but considering the car is from 06 I believe it would be great to replace bearings & front hubs.

Here is the link to the 34 bucks DTF pair of fron bearings. Do you recommends to get them or just pay the 134 bucks per bearing at the dealer?

    Appreciate

Here is the link to the bearings:

This is a job that involves a lot of labor, so stick to what is known to be good quality maker.

    FRONT Bearing choices:

    SKF FW97...about $60 + shipping

    TIMKEN WB000020...about $60 + shipping

Make sure the magnetic encoder side faces the inside of the van.

PS: No need to replace the hub, re-use the hub.

I have made the mistake of going cheap aftermarket on wheel bearings and will never do it again. 2 for 2 bad right out of the box. I agree with the previous advice. Stick to known quality on this particular part.

I am attaching a photo from SKF Technical Document to show you the "Magnetic Encoder".
Make absolutely sure that the "Magnetic Encoder" faces inside the van, this is where the wheel rotation signals are being picked up by the ABS sensor.

If you look carefully at both seals:
    - The Outer seal is the normal seal, it is fixed to the OUTER race and is stationary.
    - The Inner seal is the seal with Magnetic Encoder, so it is fixed to the INNER Race, this way the seal rotates with the wheel.

This is another good reading on the Magentic Encoder:
Honda Front Wheel Bearings With Integrated ABS Tone Ring: Import Car

    January 20, 2010

The distinctive feature of these wheel bearings is that one of the two seals on the bearing has a built-in magnetic impulse wheel. Caution should be taken to make sure that the seal with the ABS impulse ring is installed in the correct direction.

The side with the impulse ring needs to be installed closest to the ABS sensor. If it is installed backward, the ABS system will not function.

The side with the ABS ring can be identified either by placing a lightweight metallic object (such as a paper clip) to the magnetic side or by a close visual inspection. The close visual inspection will reveal the ABS impulse ring windows, which can be seen through the seal surface. Care should be used when handling and installing the bearing so that the impulse ring is not damaged. If this occurs, the ABS system will not function correctly.

The chart shows the part numbers specifically related to Honda applications:

Appreciate the tip. I already ordered 2 Timeken bearings for 61 a piece at ebay.

This is cool stuff. Unfortunately I missed the SKF/ bearings on ebay. But I ordered the German ones (Timeken)

Would be careful during the installation.

That's right. I actually consider installing new hubs as well, but it's not necessary.
