Sound Deadening my 2009 Honda odyssey

Hi Everyone,I just had my 2009 Honda Odyssey sound deadened using dynamat extreme and some dynaliner by dynamat. I love everything about this car except the road noise associated with it. Its smooth, comfortable, luxurious, very roomy, handles very well, reliable, safe, and just an exceptional car all the way around. But the road noise on the highway kills me. I also drive a 2009 honda accord and it has the same problem. So I began searching for solutions and found this site which had a lot of helpful information. I appreciated all the information, support, and ideas everyone brought to the site. Therefore, I decided when I go ahead with this project, I would document everything I could and share with everyone here so i hope this helps someone. First I visited local shops who do this and got estimates/ideas. Costs to dynamat the floor and door panels ranged from $1200-$1600. typical charges were $60-70/hour for labor then material. To much in my opinion. So next I spoke a guy I normally use for collision repair. He's a very skilled and nice/trustworthy guy I've done business with who does this on the side (he works for a collision repair shop). He's done it a few times and agreed to do it. I told him I wanted to keep the cost down by buying the parts myself and leaving the labor to him and he agreed. I bought:2-boxes of Dynamat Xtreme for $142.99 (each) on amazon and got free shipping thru amazon prime.2-rolls of dynamat dynaliner 1/4 inch (32x54" each) for $49.00 (each) on amazon with free shipping. His labor to dynamat the floor and all 5 doors was $500. Total = $900 (previous auto shops quotes didn't include dynaliner)Since he worked on it after primary job it took 1-week. Otherwise maybe 3-4 days.here are some pics to show what he did.

driver rear panel rear view w/dynamat dynamat wheel well lazy susan dynamat passenger rear panel
dynamat then dynaliner dynamat then dynaliner

As you can see he stripped the doors, removed vapor barrier, dyanamat the doors, then dynaliner driver and passenger front doors. Not sure yet if he kept vapor barrier on, will let you know. Also dynamat xtreme the sliding doors and hatch (will post those pictures when there available. Each door did a sheet (18"x32") and rear lift gate did 2 pieces. Only front two doors got dynalined and rear wheel wells (figure majority of noise comes from there-couldnot dynamat front wheel well because of that thick padding(heat/sound barrier)-not enough room for carpet if you do). Then 12-sheets (18"x32") went to floor, did all except middle from behind the lazy susan to where rear well begins (figure that area is elevated and away from tires and saved material). Also didn't do whole trunk. I did the east and west walls of the trunk (figure the north and south walls are protected by the bumper and underbody components whereas sides exposed to tire noise.) Also didn't do floor bc has some factory sound deadening in form of dampener and carpet padded on bottom. Also the part of lazy susan thats not dynamat i put down dynaliner-left over and covered it.
So there you have it, doors dynamat extreme with 2 fronts dynalined also. Floor dynamat xtreme along the whole front, along sides, and some of trunk. Also dynalined the rear wheel wells and lazy susan under floor metal. I will pick it up tomorrow or after tomorrow, I measured db inside with a phone app and it measured 77-78db, I will let everyone know what the results yield.
I hope you all enjoyed this, I think its great this site is available and that we can all do this and help one another. I will try to check the site every couple of days and respond. Thanks again to everyone.

    Hey again odyssey fans,
So I picked up the van and I have to say I'm impressed with the difference. First off, when your inside the car and you talk to someone outside the car, they can barely hear you. Then I noticed road noise on the highway was little to nothing. Wind noise was still audible but not road noise. I was very pleased. Also, I noticed when cars passed me I could only hear that passing sound faintly, also very nice. I measured sound db and it recorded 70-72 from 77-78. They say a 5 point reduction in db is like making your car 1/2 as quiet. I would recommend this to any odyssey owner as I can now say my odyssey is complete, no faults. Thats big to me because I love the van and can see myself owning it for a long time now (not the case before due to the road noise). I also have more pictures from the sliding doors and hatch.
    1. sliding door panel removed
    2. sliding door with dynamat in two major holes and small holes. (could not fit dynaliner)
3,4,5. lower part (under headlights) with dynamat only

I just sound deadened the hood myself by applying the dynamat extreme and then the dynaliner ontop of it and it has made some difference. You still hear the engine but less roughness (like the sound you hear when you move from a stop) and more of the sound thats made when the car midway through acceleration, in other words less coarseness. Sounds like a more refined engine which is impressive because its already refined. I would recommend it.

very, very impressed. My experience with butyl/rubber based adhesive dampeners is that they eliminate noise from resonance, not road/tire noise. Some sort of high density foam would be better. However, your measured results now have me rethinking my belief. Thanks for the post.

Outstanding post. Dynamat extreme works as I covered one of my cars in it. It's like driving in my living room. extremely quiet and solid feeling.

Don't forget Arnel, i used dynamat dynaliner (sound barrier) on front doors (ontop dynamat) and to cover the inside of rear wheel wells ontop of dynamat. I also used the dynamat at whole front and along the sides of the van because the majority of road/tire noise enters from the wheel wells and along the sides.

aaah, thanks, I missed that. Not familiar with Dynaliner...must be new. Now I definitely can see how you dropped 5-6db which is a lot. Looks like I'm taking the M3 apart again

Your post is 8 years too late, lol...I wanted to do something to our noisy van (noisiest car we ever own in 05) but now it's too old and about to be replaced soon. But your info is still very useful as this must be the first time that someone actually did something and show the details and the result. I was always currious as where to put the insulation for my current car. I am a bit confused though. If Dynaliner is sound barrier then what does Dynamat do? And Dynaliner is supposed to be on top of the Dynamat? It this is true, the name Dynaliner seems misleading as it shoud be used as liner.

    Thanks for the great info.

So dynamat xtreme is a dampener that works by adding mass to your vehicles metal so that the sound waves from outdoor noise doesn't penetrate thru the metal as easily. Its like a automaker using heavier metal, that would improve road noise. The dynaliner is a sound barrier, it is placed to block whatever sound waves penetrate the metal. Therefore, the two work in unison to reduce road noise. The dynamat extreme reduces sound waves that make it into your car and the dynaliner provides a sound barrier to whatever does penetrate.
Another this is, the vehicle is very quiet in city driving. you can barely hear other vehicles and noise. Once you get on the highway, depending on the type of pavement thats used, it can still be a bit load. For example, the thruway uses pavement that makes every vehicle louder, i noticed a difference on these roads but it can still be somewhat loud. The Db i measured was on the highway by the way so theres still a noticeable reduction. Another cause for this is the tire. there are quieter tires and when i update mine, i'll keep everybody posted, maybe by the winter.

The noise that bothers me most is the road/tire noise at highway speed which is constant. So would you say doing the floor (option between floor and doors) would improve road/tire noise and do Dynamat and Dynaliner have to go together? if not, which one would be more efficient alone?

    thx

Good but tough question. Since i went with both, I don't know which would be better. What I do know is that when I drive on the highway, I still get that road/tire noise but just a bit less. When I measured the db levels inside the van, it decreased about 5-6db which is the equivalent to decreasing the noise in half. The problem is its very noisy to begin with so u still have a good amount of road noise. If you were gonna go with just one, i would say the dynaliner because the dynamat works best when placed along the outer most metal. Thats not going to happen when its on the floor. The dynaliner is a good sound barrier and could be laid down to block some incoming noise. The reason I think its library quiet in the city is because the doors are dynamat and dynaliner (i would recommend both for front doors). Again though, I'm wondering what effect some better tires would have. I can't wait to upgrade my tires.
I hope this helps. Its tough to answer because not enough people have shared there experiences and the differences. The other thing i would add is the experience has definitely improved my audio system. When i'm on the highway, It doesn't take much music to completely drown out the road noise. it is almost imperceptible. Also the vehicle stays warmer or cooler longer and with less heat/ac.
