Leak at PS gear box below steering column seen via engine bay

There is a leak at connector/pipe/hose on gear box mounted on rack that goes from steering column out to PS pump. There is no drip, just black greasy collection at connector (#7 in pic) and black collection forming on top of metal of gear box. #7 is metal NPT connector that has return hose segment #16 with clamp #21. It probably has been there long time, I just found it.

    At #7 in https://www.hondapartsnow.com/Page_P...lines&Diagram=

#7 connects to left opening seen where it shows B-33-60 in
    https://www.hondapartsnow.com/Page_P...r-box&Diagram=

Which is part of #2 in https://www.hondapartsnow.com/Page_P...nents&Diagram=

(Btw, I had a paid vehicle inspected while it was in for alignment at firestone this morning. It seems "everything is fine". I seem to find every problem myself to date anytime it is inspected there.)

I have a color pic from engine bay from last night after my timing belt work. Will post it when I get home. Is this replacement common or easy? Thanks.

Try tightening that clamp a bit. Worst case, you may need to replace that hose.

Will try that tomorrow. But will make sure to put this on my next parts order list. My repair list is only getting longer, cross one add one.

It's pretty minor. There is also a hose connection for the power steering under the transmission where there are a couple of those clamps that I found leaking on my last oil change. I simply sprayed them with brake cleaner to clean them up and then tightened them up a little. Over time, the hoses soften and those clamps start to sink into the hose. Again, worst case I'll replace the hoses. Very cheap and not a big deal. That high pressure hose is another story. If that leaks it's a bit of a job and a bit more expensive.

Need to get some PS fluid. Might as well put in the hose part 53734-SHJ-A02 Hose, Power Steering Return $10. I was going to flush out. Might as well replace the hose since I have to put new fluid. This will be good timing and combined shipping.

    Thanks.
Funny that you posted this. I was going to post this same picture this weekend when it gets a bit warmer outside. -26C right now. Mine looks like it's been leaking for awhile. Nothing wet, greasy but covered in dirt and dust. Might try tightening the clamp from up top but it's a long ways down there. When you do yours, can you let me know what size that clamp nut is.

The clamp nut is most likely 10mm. Pretty much every clamp on every Japanese car in the last 25-30 years is 10mm.

Thanks John. Do you know what is the easiest way to tighten this clamp? Can it be done without the car being on a hoist or do I try to tighten it from on top with a bunch of long extensions?

easy to tighten, if you have to go underneath, drive one side of the van over the curb and you can go under to work on it.

One of the best tools I've ever purchased is a 24" 3/8" drive extension. It comes in very handy for things like that. If you can see it from the top you can probably get a socket on it. Use a swivel if you need to.

Thanks again John, great help as usual. I do have a 24" 1/4" extension (and a few 6") and a swivel. It's easy to see from up top, I'll try that first.

Thanks JC. I did not get to work on it but took a peek before the car was out again. It looks like 10mm. Will try clean and tighten tomorrow.

    PS Line Leaking?

I found the same problem on my van! I'll try tightening the clamp but 99% chances are I need a new hose. Time to take a PS fluid shower LOL!

Dang. I missed that one. I figured by that title it was same as our usual ps lines up top. I guess problems come in bunches. I ordered some fluid and hose this morning. I guess its time to replace and forget.
