    Question Infrequent Shudder above 60mph

I have a 2010 Honda Odyssey EX with 114,000 miles. We have noticed a problem that occurs only above 60 mph. It is a shudder that feels like it is underneath the drivers seat. It can also be felt by the front passenger. The shudder occurs infrequently, for example once or twice every ten to twenty miles on the interstate, and sometimes not at all. I think I read it may be a driveshaft problem. It was purchased in April 2016. Since the purchase, it has had two (yes, two!) engine replacements. After the second replacement, the dealership also noticed there was a problem with the steering and replaced the steering rack. We recently put new tires on the van and had a wheel alignment, along with replacing the drivers side front wheel bearings. This has not fixed the problem with the intermittent shudder. The van drives smoothly otherwise.

To be clear, it's not an EX-L, is it? It's just a plain EX?

Things to look at are tires & wheels, of course, but you say you replaced those and no change? Next to look at would be worn axles and/or motor mounts. You don't have VCM so motor mounts are not expensive, relatively speaking. Usually vibrations that you feel in the seat are from the rear and vibrations from the front (in a front wheel drive car) are felt in the steering wheel but it's not always the case.

You can't just throw that out there and walk away!

What happened? Why 2? Who paid for it?

The day after we bought the car, the check engine light came on and started blinking. It had multiple misfires. It took a lot of testing, but they found out it had a blown head gasket and was leaking. Unfortunately, the car was not under warranty since it had over 100,000 miles. We worked out a deal with the dealership we bought it from that they would pay all but $600 of the engine replacement and they would cover the labor. The "new engine" had 72,000 miles on it and had a six month warranty on it. We drove it for a month and a half and noticed it kept needing oil added, but we didn't see any signs of it leaking. Then one day we noticed blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. We took it back to the dealership and there it just died. Since it was under warranty, they covered another engine, but it took almost a month to get it back. They kept finding new problems, like the steering rack needing to be replaced and that it needed new catalytic converters. Thankfully, the dealership covered everything. It has been tempting to want to get rid of the van after all we've been through with it. We also have had to replace the battery and the alternator, too! But other than the occasional shudder, it is a really nice van that drives smoothly. We had a Civic that we had for 17 years (and was still going when we sold it!) and didn't give us a lick of trouble, so we thought we couldn't go wrong buying another Honda.

An occasional shudder, if it's not something in the axles or wheels could also be a torque converter shudder. I hope it's not but it is definitely possible. You'd want it to have it diagnosed properly, though.

I bought my van with less 70k miles and 10 yrs old. It had occasional shudder on 4th and 5th gears that I attributed to the torque converter. Transmission fluid was in a bad condition and it was obvious that PO never changed it. I did three drain and refills of transmission fluid and with the third one I swapped the external filter on the 05 models. No more shudder. You should do the transmission maintenance if you don't know the service history.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We are taking the van to our mechanic on Monday. Will update with results.

If the shudder started after the engine replacements, it could be due to engine misalignment, when they tightened back up the motor mounts.

That is a definite possibility. We did not have the shudder before.

Unfortunately, it's the torque converter. Wondering what we should do?! We feel torn because it is a really nice vehicle and we have put new tires, etc into it. But we are tired of spending money on it! We also don't want car payments.

One way to look at it is that let's say the repair costs $2K, your van is probably the best $2K van you can buy.

Also, who says it's the torque converter? Did you ask them to check motor and trans alignment, which for the shop, is a lot less costly than the torque converter.

You can also drive on and live with the shudder.

Have you done 3 drain and fills of the ATF? I'd start with that and see if it helps any.

We're done with this van! Planning to take it back to where we bought it and see what they will give us. Also are planning to buy a relative's Nissan van that is in immaculate condition and has all records and well maintained. Is only selling because she doesn't need a van for just herself.
