    Trans Drain and Fill Interval

Since I don't know the history of my van (bought it at 132K), I've been doing drain and fills (1) at every oil change. The PO did one right before I bought it, and I've done 3. So 4 in the last year and a half and 15K miles.

This is what my fluid looks like. You guys think it's safe to go every other at this point?

The darker spots on the tray are oil (I also did an oil change).

And the real question is, do you have a trans problem?

Do you tow a heavy trailer straight up the Rocky Mountains?

Do you run the van in races on the weekends?

Do you drive around with 50 bags of cement?

If the PO changed the fluid before you bought it, you know some of the history and what did he say?

If you live in Maryland, can I pick up the used fluid?

From what others have posted, 3-4 drain and fills with about 200 miles between each should be sufficient for a complete fluid change for the manufacturers recommended interval of about 30,000 miles.

There are no trans problems besides a every so often harder than usual downshift. Other than that it's pretty perfect. But knowing my 06' is prone to early failures, and not knowing if a 3X drain and fill has EVER been done, I would say an extra $18.00 (Valvoline Max Life) and 30 minutes is a VERY small price to pay for added insurance vs. $4K for a transmission.

I was asking based on how clear the fluid was, not for you to rag on how often I decide to change my fluid based on my preferences. But thanks for your comment kind sir. You can definitely come pick the fluid up in Tucson if you would be so kind.

Thanks man, I'm guessing since I've done 4 in about 15K, my fluid should be GTG every other oil change for a 1X drain and fill at this point. I was just looking for confirmation.

That's what my van has had. 1 drain and fill every other oil change and I will continue the same. Only do two 5k oil changes a year. Did that same routine on my Pilot and it served me well there too. Just cheap insurance in my book.

Nice, it seems every other is a popular way to go amongst 3rd gen owners. I'll be going to that soon, although I think I may do 1 more at the next oil change just to be extra safe.

I did have a good amount of gunk on the drain plug this time around.

You fluid looks ok in my opinion. If you are not sure you should check the transmission filter and change it if it has not been changed before. Some forum members, including myself, installed an external Magnafine filter on the return line to keep the fluid clean.

    what I've done
3x drain and refill when I bought the van at 90k (PO did trans service at dealer 75k)
add oem honda transmission cooler + Magnafine inline filter
1x drain and refill every 10000-12000 after
the fluid now is red if you drain not dark red

Nice thanks. I do need to change the filter. I have the filter and washer, I just need to do it. I will look into the external filter too. Thanks for the productive post and advice!

I plan on doing the trans cooler since I live in AZ. Is there a thread detailing the inline filter? Thanks!

For the 06 (the return lines are different on later models):

Thanks, awesome stuff. I think I'll go with the new oem filter since I already have it. Maybe I'll switch to a Magnefine down the line.

Nice, annually would be just as good of a rule of thumb too.
