My 2016 Odyssey is about 4 months old and has 1200miles.
1. When should I do the first oil change? Is there any point only changing oil (not filter) at 2 k miles? To get the break in oil out. Routine oil changes I want it done at the dealer for warranty reasons (but I also do my own with other cars.) I know DIY oil change should not void warranty but....
2. ATF drain & fill -
IF i decide to do this at say 2k miles, is there anything at all to do with the maintenance minder?
Will the dealership come to somehow know that I have done it? (I mean will the car report it when they scan or something)
Is Valvoline maxlife atf the same color as Honda ATF?
I was told the factory uses a break-in oil when the engine is built and installed. You do not have to change the oil until it gets down to 15% of useful oil life left. As far as the transmission goes, I used to have the tranny fluid changed every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. Never had a problem with the transmissions. YMMV.
Change your oil when the indicator is 15%. knowing that it's perfectly ok for it to go down to zero. Zero mean zero after all. There's still oil life at 15%.
For the ATF, like others, I've always done 25-30K. And maybe when it get's to 60 or 70K, do a 3X ATF D and F.
Honda DW-1. There are aftermarket choices out there that meet DW-1 spec and one of the most popular ones is Valvoline MaxLife which is a full synthetic and recently added the DW-1 compatibility to its label . DW-1 that is sold in Canada is labeled as synthetic, though U.S. old DW-1 is not, probably due to labeling laws rather than an actual difference in the fluid.
About ATF, I'm in the camp that changes it often - every 2nd oil change or 15,000 miles. That keeps it fresh and so an occasional 3x change is not required.
My older Ody does not have a MM, but when I get a new van I plan to keep the same schedule WRT ATF.

Didn't want to start a new thread and not jacking this one but was it safe for me to change the 1st oil on my 2016 odyssey. I bought it in November 2016 and have about 7k miles. Just reading up and they said your not suppose to change the oil until the maintenance light says around 15% or less during a new car break in period because of the manufacture additives. Mine is around 40% and the oil was getting dark. I used mobile 1 0w-20 fully synthetic. Much thanks all and this site rock!
You'll be fine - 7,000 miles is lots to get the benefits of the manufacturer fill.
I'm surprised you were able to get 7,000 miles and still have 40% oil life left. I did my first oil change at 10,000 km (about 6,200 miles) and I had only 20% showing on the oil life indicator.
