Hi Everyone,

This is my 1st post. I was in the market for a 2013 Ody when I learned that it was due for a Mid Cycle Refresh. The folks over at Vtec.net got some decent info from dealer sources regarding the update. I am glad I didn't jump the gun over Presidents Day weekend. I have 2 toddlers and am expecting a 3rd in May so I hope this proves to be true. I have a Mazda CX-9 currently that will have to do until the 2014s show up. This is what they posted...

The Odyssey will be receiving its mid-cycle model updates for the 2014 year and we're hearing that it will receive some interesting updates. The factory will be accepting orders from dealers beginning next month, and we're told that timing-wise this points to an onsale date of mid to late Summer.

We can confirm (from the order sheet that we saw) that 6-speed automatic transmissions will be standard across the board for the 2014 Odyssey. As for the other updates, you can probably pretty much guess the list of what's coming, but we've specifically heard about the following items:

  • Earth Dreams engine (we expect that to mean the 3/6-cyl VCM + VTEC setup employed by the 2013 Accord).
  • Lane Watch (mirror-cam)
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Multi view backup camera
  • LED headlights/taillights for Touring Elite Model
  • Adaptive cruise control

I'm pretty excited to see the lane watch camera from the 2013 Accord in there. I thought it was a great idea for the Accord and is an even better idea for a big safety-minded vehicle like the Odyssey. I kind of wasn't sure if it would get it, though, because the Accord has dual LCD screens, and I doubt the Odyssey will add a second LCD screen in a mid cycle refresh, so I guess the lane camera will just override whatever else is on the nav screen? Hopefully you aren't trying to use the nav system to get last second directions when you put your blinker on!

I wonder if they're actually LED headlights or just LED accent/daytime running lights, like on the Accord? True LED headlights would be pretty awesome, but so far I think I've only seen them on hybrid and electric vehicles where power savings is worth the price premium of LED lighting.
edit: I just noticed for the first time that the top model Accord actually does have real LED headlights. Very interesting! I wonder how they compare to xenon in terms of lighting performance and reliability?

I agree the feature I'd most like to see is push button start, but I'm not too confident we'll see it. I know it requires a significant overhaul to a vehicle's computers/electric systems to add something like that. Then again given how much else they're adding in terms of electronics, maybe they have the foresight to design the van in 2011 with push button start in mind.

+1 for push-button starting.

From what I've read here, Honda has already modified the electronics in preparation for push-button starting. You just have to momentarily turn the key to the start position - the computer takes over and starts the engine. Perhaps a Gen 4 owner can confirm...

Cool find, but I'm confused...

Are they only confirming the 6AT at all levels as seen on the order sheet but for the rest they've just specifically heard of?

Anyway, love the speculation :D. I'm Looking forward to also see some new colors too

Being in the market for a minivan myself, I will probably buy a 2013 and take advantage of the aggressive pricing right now. The 2014's will be going for MSRP or close to it for 6-12 months easy. If you have ever worked with Honda dealers you will know that they don't discount much on new/refreshed models.

That said, that Dream engine sounds sweet. Probably looking at a 30hp boost over the current engine and will get similar or even better fuel economy along with better toruque distribution.. But.. I am guessing MSRP will get bumped up with the new transmission and engine and other goodies. Current MSRP is $37,665 on an EX-L with RES (model I am considering) and I am getting offers for $33,300 before tax+tag+title (that price includes destination and all other dealer options and fees). So about $4365 below MSRP. If MSRP goes up to $38,500 for the same vehicle, and dealer wants MSRP, I would have to pay over $5K more to get the updated engine, tranny?

Definitely like the sound of the updates, but getting a 2013 Odyssey for under invoice is pretty tempting.. :)

LED headlights sounds too cool, but only on touring elite ? $33k for Ex-l with RES is a pretty good deal.

I've noticed they also on our EX-L.

I just hate these rumors especially coming from dealer. Anyways I don't think LED headlights will make it to the Honda brand for a while since they just debuted on the Acura's. they will probably keep the exclusivity for awhile.

I'd be tempted to, but my current car (03 Forester) has that feeling that something is going to break on it (the engine always seems to smell hot after I drive the car for any length), and I'm getting sick and tired of trying to get both a car seat and my wife in the car with me. The Forester's rear seat is tiny, resulting in my wife sitting way too close to the airbag to be considered safe. And since I do accident recon stuff, and look at those nasty crash pictures more frequently than most people, I'm always leery of that.

Just wish that they have push button start for 2013..then I will be good.

Should be easy to change player to play BR disc.

With all the updates, the TE would be around 50K or more for OTD....the wife would definitely not approve :)

Yes, I remember back in 2008 when Honda dealers were refusing to budge off MSRP on the incoming current-gen Pilots. One dealer went from "the first 5 are pre-sold" to calling me two weeks later begging me to come in for a test drive. Nevermind the fact that gas at the time was easily over $4/gallon.

My 2008 MDX has the turn and release auto-crank system, so Honda's had the technology for awhile. Push button start would be nice though.

I'll be in the market for an Odyssey in the late summer/early Fall as well. Will be looking to get a 2014 TE, but it will be fun to see how cheap the 2013's get which may be tempting. The Ody is almost certain to get new front and rear fascias and maybe colors too--would love for the non-burgundy red to reappear.

Whenever the 2014s become available for order, I'll probably just visit or call around to a few dealers and offer them $500 over invoice to order a 2014 TE for me. Very little work required on their part and they don't have to have the car sitting around on their lot, either.

If they try to force me to pay MSRP or anything over what I'm willing to pay, I'll move on to the next dealer. If they're all like that, I'll just wait a few more months until they aren't quite so proud of the refresh. I'm in no big hurry.

It really just depends on your dealer and demand in your area. When I lived in Northern VA, no dealer near me was willing to budget on MSRP for awhile on a new model or refresh. Many of them had "area adjustment" on the sticker for $500-1000 and wanted over MSRP. Simple economics, supply and demand. If there is high demand and low supply, most dealers will get as much as they can. The same thing happened recently with the FR-S and BRZ cars in my area. No dealer was willing to budge from MSRP with several asking $1-2K over. As long as you are willing to wait it out you should be good.

Would you be willing to drive 100 miles to save $1000? How about 200 miles to save $2000? I ask this of people a lot since they get locked into the mentality of only looking at the closest dealer. The deals are there, an incremental effort on your part should yield additional savings.

It won't be quite as dramatic a change as a mid-model refresh for the Odyssey, but when the 2009 Pilots came out Honda was basically giving the 2008's away with $4,000+ off invoice. I imagine $2500 or so off invoice wouldn't be difficult to come by for the 2013's in time.

What will be difficult is trying to find the perfect time when the rebates continue to increase, yet you can still find the model and color you want. Existing stock goes quickly.

As regards the engine, the Odyssey can certainly use addtional horsepower, and most importantly, gobs of torque. If the 6spd tranny rumors are correct, the higher gearing inherent in a 6-spd in 5th and 6th gear can certainly benefit from increased torque which will lower the number of heat and wear-producing downshifts.

Never did understand why, in the Odyssey with it's greater weight and coefficient of drag, Honda equipped the vehicle with the same displacement V-6 as the Accord but lowered the horsepower ratings. Is there an intake or exhaust problem that limits higher power ratings in the minivan vs. the car ?

I've done some searches for any improvements in breathing for our 2012 like less restrictive air intakes and cat-back exhaust systems and can only find the former.

Probably not in the market to replace my '12 EX-L Navi for another 3 yrs. For me, shopping around means 8 dealerships in 250 mile radius (4hr drive) with 2 "local", and with internet checking of inventory, I can pretty much guarantee best price. It's a good way to shop.

Its not just the raw HP and Torque values but the torque curve that Honda changed between the car V6 vs their truck V6. Heavier trucks need a less peaky curve so they adjusted it with the result of marginally lower HP and torque.

I am still happy with our 2012 :)

6-sp transmission upgrade for MCR is pretty much as expected. But the rest are only "nice to have" feaures.

I really wished they would put in keyless entry for the van. push button is nice, but keyless is truly useful when you are carrying baby seat or a lot of stuff. haha.

I might be misunderstanding you, but... every vehicle I've ever been in that has a keyless push button start system also has keyless entry to the doors. Basically if it has a push button to start the car then you don't have to get your key out of your pocket to get in the car, either.

In fifty plus years of owning many more vehicles than you would imagine, one factoid about engine power, or lack thereof, has become crystal clear.

An engine that is more efficient in producing horsepower and torque, will ALWAYS use less fuel than a less efficient engine. The reason is the driver doesn't have to stick their foot in the throttle as far to move and accelerate the vehicle. In other words the engine doesn't have to work as hard or rev as high in the RPM range to overcome inertia, wind resistance, and maintain a desired speed on grades.
