2012 Odyssey - Gas Mileage

Hello:

We have a 6 month old 2012 Odyssey. Our gas mileage is nowhere the sticker mpg listing.
Currently we are getting 12.44 MPG with 90% small driving events. For instance driving less than 3 miles each time.
This is also with the A/C turned off.. I dont want to check it when we need to turn that back on.

Does this seem feasible?

The engine won't get to full operating temperature (i.e. optimum efficiency) on a trip of 3 miles. (The norm is 6 miles to get to full temperature.) So 12.44 MPG seems appropriate for this type of driving.

Also, stations are pumping "winter gas" at this time of year which has less energy, and so lower MPG, than "summer gas".

Do you have a longer trip planned soon? That kind of driving would be a better test of your van's fuel economy.

There are so many threads on this already. Your van needs about 12k before many owners report improved fuel economy. Seems to be a number where it is broken in, and matches both our 05 and 08 Odysseys. Give it time and as DDO stated, recheck on a long road trip.

I read many of the MPG posts here but did not see anything about a break in period. If that is correct, then I will be much happier.

No long trips planned anytime soon. But I will compare what I get when do take a long trip to local trips.

I just picked my 2012 3wks ago and I'm already getting 21 mpg. Of the 900 miles on it, about 450 are hwy miles.

The 12mpg you're getting seems REALLY low. Have you taken it to the shop yet? If so, what did they say?

I'm no car expert, but adding more miles (potentially 12k miles as suggested by the previous poster) to see if the problem persists seems like if there was an underlying problem it could worsen it. Again, I'm no expert, I'm only using my own rationale.

With mostly < 3 mile trips, likely with a lot of stop and go, will kill your mileage. You are accelerating a very heavy box.

That kind of usage will also increase oil change service frequency.

Sometimes these aren't accurate anyway...if you want to be real anal about your mpg, keep track of your mileage every trip to the gas pump...say, 13.6 gallons you filled up with, and you calculated 341 miles from last time you gassed up...easy peasy...

Averaging 21mpg since day one (4 miles). Lowest we see per tank is about 18mpg (all city driving). Saw 25mpg on last 1000 mile trip (28 on HWY). Currently have about 7000 miles total on the 2012 Odyssey EX.

On short trips like you described, I get 12-14 mph. On mixed city/ highway driving, I consistently get 20-21mpg. On purely highway trips, I get 27-30 mpg depending on topography( 27 between Ohio and SC, 30 between Ohio and Oklahoma).
pSuggest you fill up the tank and do a couple hours of expressway driving to see how you do on mpg.
