Question Code p 740 ( Torque converter clutch circuit open)

The check engine light came on recently so I hooked up my obd 2 and the code it gave me was p740 for....Torque converter clutch circuit open..
I resetted it to see if it will reoccur and it should if the condition still persists (will inform if it does come back) SOOO with that in mind ...anyone else with this problem? and could this mean the begining of something much worse to occur soon? 2000LX with 71000 miles.. 3 qts drained and replenished every other oil change (FYI)

    Missing O-Ring Can Cause
    A/T DTC P0740

This info applies to all models with A/T except
    Passport.
Before you replace the trans for DTC P0740 (Lock-up
Control System) or for delayed engagement after
sitting overnight, inspect the O-ring on the snout of
the torque converter. If its damaged or missing,
replace it and clear the DTC. Usually a new O-ring is
all you need to fix the trans.

    code P0740

Today the check engine light came again on for the same thing ..torque converter clutch circuit malfunction...sooo this will probably call for a trip to the dealer but before I do anyone with a similar situation? I wonder if this will be covered by the extended warranty? And will driving this vehicle with this condition pose any problems?

    Hi Paul-

You asked if "driving this vehicle in this condition would pose any problems?"..

    In my opinion,

    Probably not,

But you have to answer some questions for yourself before you can be assured..

Does the transmission operate normally? No signs of kickback/upshift flare/slipping/ etc?

Do you have a "substanial" transmission fluid leak?

Plain and simple, this could be an easy fix (solenoid, connectors, harness) OR this may be a very costly fix ( removing the transmission to replace a 99 cent O-Ring)..

I would recommend visiting the dealer for a more accurate diagnosis than what we could give you here.. it might not be as bad as you think..

    Thanks for your reply Breakstuff

No apparent leak of atf and the vehicle seems to drive fine . A visit to the dealer is perhaps inevitable ..Thanks

    code p0740

I took the vehicle in to the dealer and I went along with the tech for a test ride during which he pointed out symptoms requiring a tranny change.
This is now scheduled for early next week! To reiterate my ODY is A 2000 with 71000 miles.

I am having all of the same problems. How do I reset the DTC?

ps a week before the engine light came on I topped off the fluid with ATF (not Honda) then the light came on, will a flush help my problem?

    re tranny

    Hi spad7
I am not sure if your year and VIN is included in the extended warranty offered by honda for tranny problems. Better check first and you should have received a letter from honda regarding this if covered ( 7 years,100,000 miles whichever comes first) I have an OBD2 diagnostic tool that has a reset function and that how I resetted the DTC code. I have read somewhere on this site that pulling a particular fuse could do this as well but I am not sure which one. As for flushing the tranny , I was advised by a honda tech that flushing this tranny is not a good idea hence my draining and refilling with 3qts+ of HONDA atf just about every other oil change..The reason he cited is that flushing stirs up and carries whatever clutch contaminants into all passages in the tranny and could lead to early failure! Also when I took My ody in I was told by the service tech that the clutch material has a significant higher metal content which supposedly leads to premature shedding and subsequent "flow " of contaminants in the system. IT seems to me that most Odys my year is probably deemed for a tranny replacement. It seems to be just a matter of time as well as miles!! Good luck to you hope I was of some help.

    code p0740 and tranny change

Picked up my ODY today Sat. The tranny was rebuilt
I have to say rebuilt as it seems they used the old casing, IT just didnt seem newish to me, some bolts were old looking others were new, Especially the ones that secured perhaps the solenoids and such! Gaskets were new so was the drain bolt. Anyways Im now told that the tranny is still good for 7 years and since the vehicle has 70000 miles then another 30000 miles as dictated by the extended warranty coverage. It drives great!!! AS far as maintenance I am to change the tranny oil every 25000 miles!!The replacement clutches are different, so I was told not to expect any problems as before. WE will see. Thats all!!!

    Hello Everyone,
Its been 22000 miles since ( changed at approx 72000miles) I have had a tranny change by the dealer for a Code p0740. And over the weekend of the 2nd Oct 2004 The tranny started acting up again and prompted yet another P0740 code. This time however my wife tells me the tranny is acting worse than the first time. I will take it to the dealer soon and keep everyone posted. Cheers

Here is the update. A new/rebuilt transmission was authorized by
Honda. It should arrive in 4-5 days. The technician seem to think that I will get a "new tranny" as this will be the second tranny change. We shall see! Cheers....Paul

    Paul,
Yesterday, I mistakenly posted the message below as a new thread, due to my inexperience. EGADS, a friendly Forum member, suggested that I post it here as a follow-up of your thread. Hope you could help out.

    Thanks.

    Tranny Replacement-Paul R
    Paul,

From your previous threads, I learned that you were having your tranny replaced (for the second time). How is the "new" tranny working? I just had nine done last week. (a rebuilt tranny was put in my 2001 LX with 42K miles ) I have a few questions. Did the dealer (which one?) tell you that you would need the front and the passenger-side motor mounts changed, as they told me? Do you know whether it should be done when tranny work is performed? I picked up my van last week (I told the dealer NOT to replace those motor mounts, since I did not feel any strange vibrations). These couple of days, I notice some clunking sound from under the hood, getting progressively worse. Plus, there is an intermittent high-pitched noise, also from under the hood. I am quite confused. I wonder if the tech at the dealer put things back right. These noises were not there prior to the tranny change.

Do you recommend any dealer or independent shops specializing in Honda cars in the Miami area?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give.

    re tranny change

    Hi ZZALOP
When I had the first tranny change (July 2003 and approx 71000 miles ) it was not mentioned to me about the pass motor mount and front mount..Subsequently at 78500 miles (Dec 03) I began getting a "thud sound" especially on hard acceleration. A long story short the pass. side motor mount was bad and I changed it myself along with the two visible aux. belts. Now that the tranny is being changed for the second time the technician says that the rear mount is bad and that he would check on the front one as well.I am getting back the van tomorrow 14 oct. There were no strange noise when it was done the first time in fact I was quite impressed with the way the van ran. What I am most concerned about was the "premature failure" of the second tranny. My tech tells me that a tranny along with the torque converter are what is normally replaced under warranty. This time I will see. Im in Kendall west of country walk and Honda South did it the first time.
But lately Ive been going to Braman Honda on Coral way reason being the tech is someone I am comfortable with and trust. I have heard good things about ACCUTECH loacted in an industrial area near Signature Gardens .I have never used them however.Good luck and keep me posted...Cheers

    tranny work completed!!!

I picked up the vehicle today 14 oct 2004 and wow !!! it runs great ..just like the last time!!!! However the tech said that the fluid looked fine and the failure could have been perhaps a seal or perhaps something else... they are not required to open the bad one for diagnosis! ...who knows! It is required by the dealer to strain a bit of the tranny fluid and send back along with the bad tranny to wherever! This will allow them to determine cause of failure. Also the rear mount and the front mount were bad...the front one is a hydraulic one and he personally showed the bad one to me ..likewise the rear.
Thats it folks lets keep our fingers crossed!!!!....cheers

    Paul,

Thanks for your reply. I took my van to a local shop for the front brake job today and they discovered that one bolt was missing and another loose on the passenger-side motor mount. I lost confidence in that tech at Braman Honda. After a new bolt was installed and the loose one tightened, there is LESS noise now although still not quite the same as before the tranny change. I think I will take to a suspension specialist for a check up. Hopefully something can be done. The van drives beautifully now, sans the noise.
