    Power steering hose availablilty

My 00 Ody blew a power steering hose last week. The car has been at the dealer for over a week. The metal tubing under a clamp in the tray had collected road salt and corroded and finally broke during a tight turn. Deal says part is on National Back Order and will not attempt to obtain a local manufactured replacemtn. Therefore, I have no idea how long I will be without the car. Does anyone have a solution?

The dealer will not use non-Honda parts.

Fluid for power steering system is routed thru a number of hoses and lines (metal tubing). I suspect your failure was with on of the lines rather than a hose???

The lines are bent to a specific shape and have stops at each end to locate the hoses. This makes replacement easy which is why your dealer wants the Honda part.

    Your options are:
    1. Wait.
    2. Find a salvage part from another Ody.
    3. Find tubing and make a replacement line.
    4. Ask the dealer if he could just run hose temporarily until he gets the line.

One question to ask the dealer is best-case and worst-case regarding WHEN he'll have the part, which may help you decide what to do.

I have ordered from College Hills before and recommend them. They are in Ohio too. Enter your Model, Year, Trim and Transmission then choose P.S. Hoses-Pipes:

One other band-aid to consider: Just cut out the corroded area of the line (a few inches?) and install a length of hose in this area. Secure at each end with hose clamps.

Maybe you could do this or the dealer would be willing?

Being a 00 I assume you are paying and it is not under warrenty. If so I would move on to a good local garage. Most decent mechanics have the tools to handle these types of problems. Unfortunately Honda mechanics are just parts replacers. It is not rocket science to form a replacement pipe to fit.

Smile No jury rigs on the pressure hose...

If this is the pressure line and not the return line then you have to replace the whole thing (can't just use hose and hose clamps).

Excellent point bb5! Would also seem to fit with the dealer's insistence on obtaining the Honda replacement part.

    Thanks for all the replys.

Bottom line is that I will have to wait until Honda can come up with a high pressure power steering hose/line. They will not release the car for safety reasons - and will not jury rig a repair. They have offered me a rental car to travel 400 miles to retrieve the car when the repair is completed. But until them, I am without the car.

This is the first real breakdown in 118,000 miles. Can't understand why there is a nation wide parts shortage unless a large number of power steering hoses are starting to fail due to age and corrosion and the manufacturer is not able to keep up with the demand.

    "Not release the car".

You accepted that BS? You think they can impound your car?

I've got a bridge you'd love to own..........
