Question Installation of i-VES DVD system on Odyssey

I am considering the installation of an i-VES Honda DVD system on my Odyssey. However, I have some questions. I can get the system for hundreds less from www.handaaccessories.com -- however, I would like to have my local dealer do the install. Can a local Honda dealer refuse to do the install on a Honda accessory purchased from another dealer? Also, for anyone who has had this done, how much did installation cost?

I went to a Circuit City and was looking at an Audiovox VOD806 unit -- but the installation folks told me that I COULD NOT use a non-Honda overhead DVD unit in the 2003 Odyssey. They said that the Honda RES unit and the i-VES system came with some sort of bracket support and that non-Honda units could not be used in the Odyssey. They also said something about the type of headliner the Odyssey has in it. I think it was bull, but am not sure. They were stearing me toward some headrest units.

IS THIS TRUE?????

That is not true. The Ody is one of the easiest vehicles to do. The 806 will be just fine. I do not like the picture on the 806 but if you like it, go for it.

Go to your dealer and deal !!

I was going to buy mine online with handaaccessories.com, then decided to go to the dealer and tell him what I can get it for on-line and see if he will match it, he did !

Its worth the time, and they charged me $300 install !

Good luck !

Jim

Dan Dan,

What system would you recommend? The i-VES or some other unit?

Cool

I would go for and aftermarket unit, the price are falling drastically. Also the aftermarket unit you can be install multiple option. I was thinking of the I-Res, before, but wanted something with a bigger screen, considering they want top dollar for the I-Res. Go with ICON lcd screens, I heard great reviews about the 7" to 9" models, but have not heard anything for the new 15" model. I believe Vspecody has the 15" Icon monitior. Plus the aftermarket DVD player can play various formats such as VCDS, SVCD, CD-r, CD-rw, Dvd-R, DVD-RW, DVD+r, and DVD+rw & MP3. I recommend to look for a dvd player that can play vaoius formats so you can play almost anytype of media you put into it. Just my 2 cents.

GoBeavs, How do you like the i-VES?

How is the i-VES system, GoBeavs? What do you like and dislike about the system? Are the buttons on the DVD unit backlit the same as the factory CD player? How is the picture?

Kentucky63,

The Circuit City in Tri-County-Cincinnati installed my VOD806 with no problem. It's been in for 11 months with no problems, no rattles, just entertainment for the kids. Since most of toddler age videos are still on tape and we do alot of renting from the Library, I also had the Audiovox VCP installed under middle left side seat.
I searched the internet for every part that is need and went into Circuit City with the lower prices and the honored every competitors price. I ended up saying enough to where I could get the extended warranty and stilled payed less than CC's regular price. I was in CC last week and noticed that the price on the VOD806 has come down. Let me know and I can send you all of the parts that's needed

The sound through the FM Modulator is not very good. I am looking to install the Audiovox RB-3600 which allows you to by-pass the head unit and connects to the factory speakers and has it's own seperate amp.

I am still wondering about the advantages of the i-VES system -- if there are any. Maybe there aren't that many installed on Odysseys...

My main thoughts are:

1) the DVD unit is installed up front under the factory cd player. that gives easier control to the driver and passenger -- rather than to the kids. Thats kinda nice.

2) Even though it is mounted up front, I believe the i-VES system, like the Audiovox, uses the FM modulator to route sound to the speakers. I wonder why...

3) Someone up above said they did not like the picture quality on the Audiovox unit -- I wonder what the picture quality is like on the i-VES.

4) Is there any resale benefit to having a "Honda" unit rather than an outside unit in the vehicle?

5) Since there is an up-front DVD unit -- the installation on the i-VES system is probably more expensive..

Hmmm...I guess it depends on which Audiovox overhead unit...I have no complaints on mine...aside from the fact I went with a 4x3 instead of 16x9.

Rosen

Rosen has been dragging there feet. I have not said anything because I have yet to see the product. The 8 inch with the motorized screen is shipping. Yeah right, I might grow my hair back soon too! The 15" is out and has a good price. Still waiting to see it though. The 10 inch is still not out either. The 15 inch is supposedly has a good picture but I cannot verify it yet. I have been selling mostly Audiovox and the Visual Logic Headrest monitors. I like the Audiovox 705DL and do sell the 806 also. The new kid on the block I have is called Salient Design. It is a 15.3 inch widescreen with built in TV Tuner. They are designed for the Escalade and Yukon Denali right now. The unit is huge! They make a center console kit that houses the DVD and VCP. The thing is incredible. It comes already wired up and no cutting of wires. The picture is fantastic. Brightest big screen I have ever seen and wide angle of viewing. I thought it was a picture tube at first. The down side to the product is the price. The bill on the Caddy I did was over Four Grand. But what a product. Audiovox is also releasiing a new 10inch overhead with built in DVD and TV tuner this month and the headphones have built in FM radio. It will be sold only at the Expeditor level for Auto Dealers. I know nothing about price yet. Now for the bargain types there is the new Audiovox 7inch with built in DVD. It is the Movies to Go line. One year warranty and for the budget minded. Wholesale is $500 complete. DVD prices have come way down. The new DVD-3 is about $120 wholesale right now. That is a Din size unit that will handle up to 4 monitors. Front RCA jacks and last position memory. Only 1 year warranty but for the price go for it! Prices on the VOD 705dl is about $825 wholesale and the 806 is just over $930. You need two headphones and a universal console. Those are what I pay for these units but you can use that as a bargaining tool. Just remember they need to make a profit too. $300 is a high labor rate to install a factory video. $200 should be all that you paid. Check out the Salient at www.Salient-Designs.com. Also the new Pioneer stuff has hit and there indash DVDs are great and prices have dropped from last year. The 6500 DVD is a big hit with touch screen and mp3 capabilities. The unit wholesales for just over a grand and Pioneer did there homework and have been aggresive with there pricing. I am still selling a lot of VCommand navigation as well as the Pioneer. They have a new unit coming out, also cannot wait to see. That is it for right now, if you have any questions I hope I can help.
