The in-dash DVD Player has been installed!

Okay, I've installed the following equipment in my Odyssey over the weekend:

- Innovatek FD-16TV In-dash Radio/TV Tuner, CD/DVD Player
- Innovatek TH-600D In-dash 6" TFT LCD Display
- Innovatek IN-104 Roofmount 10.4" TFT LCD Display
- Innovatek TA-02Y Amplified TV Antenna

The installation of the in-dash DVD and display was fairly simple, and following the i-VES instructions from HandA.com, the dash came apart very easily.

I purchased a wiring harness to connect to the factory wiring to avoid any cutting. I wired the TFT displays and amplifier to the Accessory power through the harness so that they would be disabled when the key is removed. The deck has connections for both accessory and battery, and it was connected as such.

I continued to follow the i-VES instructions to remove the passenger door trim, around both the front and sliding doors. I did find some differences though. It was not necessary to remove the seatbelt anchor bolt from the pillar, as the seatbelt was mounted to the seat. I was also successful at sliding the top pillar molding down and feeding my wires behind it without needing to remove it or the top seatbelt mounting bolt.

To provide better access to the roof, I removed the assistance handle in the rear as well as in the front. I wish I had gotten pictures of the van naked, but my wife had the camera at the time. I was able to use the i-VES mounting points to mount my display, but I had to drill an extra hole in the bracket that came with the display.

In addition to mounting the display, needed to mount the antenna along the top of the windshield. To gain access to run the cable, I removed the front overhead console (sunglass holder/dome light) and ran the cable along the ceiling and down the pillar on the right of the windshield. The antenna runs the full length of the windshield but high enough that you don't see it from inside and in the tinted area so you don't see it from outside.

Positives:

- Both 1-DIN items fit neatly into the dash

- TV gest excellent reception

- Antenna nearly invisible in it's mounting location

- All wiring and harnesses well hidden

- Roofmount display's dome lights wired easily into middle-passenger side dome light for common operation. (No cutting or soldering required).

Issues:

- The deck doesn't power down with the ignition even though this is a documented feature in the book. Tested this on the bench, there's something wrong, will probably have to replace it.

- Some of the documented i-VES installation procedures are out-of-date and there are some slight changes.

- Wiring harness is a little bulky and fell behind cup holders which won't close now. Have to open the dash to reposition the harness.

Resolutions:

- Obtain warranty replacement for deck or put the stock deck back in with an add-on DVD player connected to the CD-Changer input and installed in cup-holder slot.

And now, the pictures. Look for more before too long.

Here are some pictures:

The camera doesn't do justice to the rear display. It is quite clear and bright.

Very nice and clean install!

I have a few questions though.
(1) Got any specs on the flip-down monitor? Is it 16:9 aspect ratio? Is it available in a 13"? Was it purchased locally?

(2) What harnesses did you buy? FM modulator hard-wired? Was it locally purchased too? Most of the stuff I bought were from the U.S. where I ended up paying freight and duties. It ended up still cheaper than getting it locally (Cdn$100-$200 less).

Reasons for asking is that I'm planning on installing a DVD system too but I'm still in the process of gathering all the components. I'm also planning on installing a 4-ch amp at the same time. I want a clean install so this has to be thought out carefully, very carefully.

ThanX for the compliment on the install.

You can check the specs on the monitor at http://www.mp3playerstore.com/stuff...cial/IN-104.htm but I haven't seen a 13" monitor. It was purchased from that website and they operate out of Montreal, so no duties.

Keep in mind I replaced the stock deck with an in-dash DVD player so the only harness I purchased was to connect with the factory harness and avoid cutting into the stock wiring. I purchased it for $11CAD at WalMart (yes, WalMart).

Wow, that is just too cool! That's conceptually what I want to do. One zone for the front two passengers and another zone for the rear passengers. Couple of questions...

1) Can you play a different picture in each zone? While playing a different picture in each zone can you also listen to the radio (assuming that each zone is using an FM modulator or IR system)?

2) Do you have any pic's of where the actual antenna is mounted? Is it above the rear view mirror?

3) Did the headunit have RCA Inputs? It mentioned something about "Left Panel RCA Video and Audio Inputs". What does the "Left Panel" mean?

4) Does the in-dash display have two RCA Inputs and one RCA output? I think that's what it mentioned...

5) Did you need a DoubleDin mounting kit?

thanks for the awesome write up. Hopefully, everything will workout with the return of the headunit. aside from all that how's the sound quality and picture quality in your opinion?

I currently only have one video source (the DVD/TV tuner deck) so, I'm unable to play a different picture in each zone or play the radio. That said, I did not install an FM modulator or an IR system. It should be noted that each display has 2 video inputs selectable from the front panel or remote control. I intend to wire the second video input to conveniently located jacks for each of the displays so that they can be connected to a portable source.

I went out to take a picture, but even with the camera pointing up at it, it's hard to see.

I didn't need one. I just used the factory bracket.

The picture quality on both displays is excellent, and it can easily be adjusted from the remote or front panel. The sound quality is okay, not quite as clean as the factory Alpine, but I haven't changed any of the speakers. The interface on the deck is a little clunky (the band button is used to cycle between radio bands, tv and DVD) but functional. It does have some nice features such as the ability to switch to the european radio standard and the ability to tune a radion station by typing the frequency on the remote control (Type 1-0-6-9-0 to get 106.9 FM). The DVD player is region free and is a full featured ESS-based DVD player.

Nice to see an other Ottawa resident in the group.

ThanX for the compliments. I'll follow up when I've resolved all my issues and try to add some pics with the panels removed.

I had to do a double-take on the driveway shot to be sure it wasn't my house! Same colour brick, trim & garage door, except mine is rusting and has a dent in it from a moment of... um... inattention (yeah, that's it), when backing up. ... Pranged the sucker with a 2" trailer ball: no damage to the Ody.

Thanks for the posting. Looks like this is the config that I'm gonna go for my '04 EX. What is the total cost? And on the wiring harness, do I still need a PIE adapter ?
Or PIE adapter is not needed anymore as the stock radio is gone already.

thanks.

No, you don't need the PIE adapter with this configuration.

I should note that I am seriously considering losing the integrated deck and putting the stock deck back in with an add-on DVD player using the PIE adapter. I am doing this because I have found that the interface on the FD-16 deck is a little clunky and it isn't intuitive to use.

Look for an update soon.

Exclamation

Okay, I put the stock deck back into the dash with the 6" display. I have ordered the cup-to-din kit from my local Honda dealer and found a Canadian source for the AUX input adapter (I went with the Blitz Safe model). Both items should be here tomorrow.

In order to get the 6" display to fit into the dash with the slightly oversized stock deck, I had to trim the top and bottom of the front trim on the 6" display. It actually looks cleaner than it did with the aftermarket deck. Unlike the pictures above, I opted to put the stock deck back on top and put the display underneath. I hadn't done this with the aftermarket deck because the display would have been blocking the IR sensor for the remote control. With the new setup, that won't be the case as the player is mounted in the cup opening and the deck comes with a remote IR sensor.

I have submitted an RMA to the folks at mp3playerstore.com to substitute the FD16 with the FD5-TV which is currently out of stock so I'm probably a week or two out before I install the DVD player, TV tuner combo in the cup space. The FD5-TV also has the added advantage of having front-panel AV inputs and dual A/V outputs so I won't be splitting my video signal and will have an extra set of audio outputs if I opt to install wireless headsets.

I'll post pictures when I have the installation completed.

1. Can you tell us the dimension of the in-dash screen ?
I am thinking to install it in my cupholder place since I have a NAV, woder if it will fit.

2. Can the in-dash screen be turned on while the van is moving or does it have some kind of connection to the brake so that it can only be viewed when the van is stopped ?

3. How did you connect both in-dash and roof-mounted screen to the back of the DVD player ? Does the player have 2 video outputs in the back ?

4. My only option to install the DVD player is inside the drawer underneath the cupholder, do you also have the dimension of the player for me to check if it'll fit.

5. I have my factory CD changer already connected to the 14-pin in the back of the stock deck, has the blitzsafe got a y-connector so that I can keep both the DVD player and the CD player connected to that 14-pin ?

Again, can't wait to see your successful re-installation ?
Thanks.
