One other option would be to check your local car stereo shops. Most of them should be able to install a nice DVD based system for probably as much or less than the dealer is charging for their system. My wife and I looked into this option, but there are a few advantages to buying the IVES - the integration is very clean, it is covered by the vehicle warranty when the dealer installs it before delivery, and you can roll the cost into your loan.
I was torn between VHS and DVD. Most of our kid's videos are on VHS, but everything new we buy is on DVD if possible, so we are starting to get a good collection of both (no way I am replacing all those VHS tapes at $20-25 a pop for kids movies). I think the best suggestion I have seen here is to get a Sony Playstation 2, which can play DVDs also, and plug it into the input jacks. That way, we have the built-in VHS, DVD through the playstation, and a video game system for when our kids get older (my oldest is only 4 now). The playstation 2 is about $299 - you won't find one designed for a car for less than that, and the ones made for home are too bulky to put in a van.
