Sticking Sliding Doors...Here is the cure for this disease

Hello everyone,

It has been a long week testing this new "invention", I must say that it worked.....Thanks to everyone for being patient as I must test this with the recent Nebraska weather (night temp down to 25-30 F with some frost).

I am a physician and using this medical product:

3M™ Transpore™ Surgical Tapes

http://multimedia.mmm.com/mws/media...y888yP1i9xxxxW-

You can search Google or ask your local pharmacy (?Walgreen).

The beauty about this tape is it is designed for wound dressing and therefore has tons of small holes to allow the skin to breathe.

Hold this tape up against the light and you will see thousands of pinholes. This allows the patient's skin to breathe. Here it allows the paint to breathe.
You do NOT want to use masking tape here (no room to breathe and it does not stick well with low temp like 20-30F).

SYMPTOMS:

1. Sliding Doors Sticking: Winter WORSE than Summer. Rainy weather also a culprit.

2. Honda USA failed their customers with poor service and give people a run-aound with a few TSB that is full of non-sense (changing the seal etc.)

3. The culprit, as through my week-long testing of my theory that the Rubber Gutter was the Culprit.
MY THEORY WAS THE GUTTER RUBBER ACTS LIKE A SUCTION CUP, AND I NEED TO MAKE THE PAINTED SURFACE OF THE SLIDING DOOR 'ROUGH' TO PREVENT THE SUCTION PHENOMENON.

A. First Picture shows you the "Rubber Gutter", the Culprit.

B. Second Picture shows you the Cure for this Disease.

So everyone is welcome to use this technique and post your experience after a week (cold weather preferable) so we as a group know it works or not.

NOTE: Every few months, you might want to replace the tape. The old glue may stick so nail remover (acetone) may help but go easy so the acetone does not damage the paint.

Enjoy the "Cheap" Fix! (Not cheap for me, I spent hours and hours over the last 2 years trying to figure out the cause behind it! At one point our frustration grew to the point that the Toyota Sienna looked appealing!).

NASA and the pen story

Hummmm....K-Jelly, well that is for another use; thanks for the thoughtbut but I guess none of us needs it now!

Someone told me (unconfirmed report) that NASA spends millions of dollars designing an ink pen so astronauts can use under weightless condition.....Well the Russians used the pencils!

I guess the Honda engineers do not have much common sense.....

Look at the "invetntions" seen in this forum:
- tips and tricks to change clock bulb
- My trick for Sticking Sliding Door
- DIY Modification Forum.

Somehow, I guess the Honda engineers can learn from reading this forum.

Perhaps we as a group should send them atube of K-Jelly for their personal use!!!!

Enjoy the fix for the Sliding Doors, I am certain all of you will be happy.

Test it and let us know......

Cannot tell you but

in any car, there are lots of black electrical tape in the wiring and they last along time.

You have a good point, maybe apply this tape in between Oct and April only???
However, there are Ody owners with stuck sliding doors even in the summer.

Forgot to post that Door Stickers

stay in the car for its life. Tha back of Door Stickers (and other stickers) have glue.

Maybe people can apply this 3M tape and give us a report next summer.

Personally I do not think the tape has that much glue on it to start with so unlikely to see any problem.
3M is a leader in tape technology.
Removing any residual glue should be easy.

Anyway, this is better than a stuck door and an angry wife...

Micropore Tape is a "gentle" tape

http://www.distrimed.com/acatalog/3m_micropore.jpg

made by paper. I have not tried it but think it is unsuitable for car because it is paper, it will get soaked by humidity and water and will peel off soon.

The 3M Transpore tape:
http://www.homecaredelivered.com/im.../1527-1_web.jpg

is made from a type of vinyl. I have had it on now for 2 weeks in Nebraska (rainy and temp down to 20F) and it is holding up nicely.

The beauty of using tape (instead of Shin Etsu etc.) is that the door seal is not coated with stuff.

CNN - hats off to you for your creativeness and sharing your findings with the forums.

Perhaps others can clarify one thing for me - what exactly is this "sticking sliding door" problem? When I first read it, I assumed that it was likely the sticking door problem that I have at this time of year - get the van washed, or it rains and then it freezes up over night and the sliding doors won't open for a few days.

Now that I have read your solution, I am thinking that your "cure" is not for the same "illness" that my Ody suffers. Will this tape help against icing up of the door?

If not, does anybody have any suggestions for keeping the doors working all winter? I have heard that Krown rust control will keep things moving as it keeps water out of all the nooks and crannies. I have an appointment this week to get it applied. I'll cross my fingers!

Cheers.

Yep same problem with my van!

Vanguard,

Your van's symptoms are EXACTLY what my wife and I have been dealing with this van (otherwise a great van) from day 1.

The problem WAS EXCATLY THE SAME worse when rainy, carwash, frost etc.
But I gather that some folks in Florida have this problem at 6070F temp.

My theory is that the "Rubber GUTTER" acts like a suction cup and "sucks" the door in. From a phsyics theorical perspective, for suction to happen:

1. SURFACE NEEDS TO BE SMOOTH.
2. THE AIR TRAPPED IN THE SUCTION "CUP" HAS A PRESSURE LESS THAN SURROUNDING ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE. This happens when temp drop and there is a nice seal around it.

I cannot change #2 but can change #1. My trick as mentioned above is to make the PAINTED surface NOT SMOOTH.

It has been a lifesaver trick now my wife loves it.

(Cancel your appointment for now, use the above 3M tape trick and let the rest of us know hoe it turns out, it should not you more than a few dollars and 1 minute per door; apply on both sliding doors. Make sure the surface is clean and DRY before applying the tape.)

CNN,

I will give it a try. It shouldn't cost me anything, I work in health information systems, so the doctors always owe me a few favors I've also learned that I can get impromptu x-rays and free casts as a favor, but that is another story

As for the Krown, I will go ahead with the appointment as it is actually to prevent rust - a definate requirement around here! Damned salt will eat the Ody like a fine box of chocolates if I am not carefull. My past Hondas have made this a priority with my Ody.

Rust

Vanguard,

I used to live in Montreal and know Ottawa quite well.

I uased to rust-proof cars but there is significant difference among shops.

I have been happy with the greasy stuff that they spray under the chassis.

Body is a waste of $. Back in the old days, the inside of the door panels' BOTTOMS were not rust-proofed! water, salt from the aircollects down there and rust starts. It is not unusual to see cars, especially Honda, starts to rust at THE BOTTOM.

The problem is salt in the air deposits down there and difficult to get it out (unlike salt deposit on the outer skin which can be washed off).

Now from what I gather car mfg's sprayed some rust-proff stuff at the bottom of the doors.

Now.....I used to do this trick:

1. Under chassis, spray with grease stuff, it penetratesinto nooks and crany.

In the Spring, when all the salt is gone....
2. Hood bottom: hose it out with a garden hose (attach a small hose and push water in there). Wait a few days for the water to dry out. Then I spray some WD-40 in there and add a few squirts of oil.

3. The door Bottoms: if you have the energy, remove the INNER panels, clean all the salt deposits out, then wipe it dry, apply some greasy stuff (I mix wheelbearing grease with engine oil).

Have not had any rust in my cars during those good old days in Montreal.

Any experience using this 3M Tape out there?

Has anyone used this 3M tape on the SLIDING DOORS?
Any Feedback?
Positive or Negative?

So far it has worked for us (into 3rd week with Nebraska weather down to 20F at night)....

If we have more "positive" response then it further validates my theory that the "Rubber Gutter" was indeed the "Culprit" behind all this Sticking Sliding Doors business.
