02 Odyssey Transmission Problem

I guess it is not just a problem.

Driving down the interstate at 65-70 mph the transmission case exploded (or so they tell me)....super loud bang...electical system went haywire...coasted to a stop...liquid leaking out of engine.

This was at 10:15 pm with 3 kids in the car and were still about 30 miles from home...got the car to the highway patrol station and had Triple A tow it to the Honda dealer.

My Odyssey is about 4 years old and has just under 64,000 miles on it. It is the top of the line model.

They said this morning the transmission case had exploded. He asked if we had tried to put the car into park while driving...yeah right...at 65 mph...are you NUTS...we do have an extended warranty through another dealer (moved since we bought the car) and so far do not know if they will cover it...this dealer thinks they should.

So...if it gets fixed...do we keep the car or sell it...not really comfortable with it now...thought about a new Odyssey, but after reading this site...not sure...have really only ever owned Hondas or Acuras....never had trouble before.

So anyone else have this happen and where do I go from here.

Did you have the oil jet recall done on the tranny? If not, could this happen due to second gear breaking?

Even if the extended warranty does not cover it, You can contact American Honda & complain they will almost surely pay for a newly rebuilt tranny with 3yr/36k warranty. But you might have to pay for labor wich is approx $800. Which is not bad since you are basicly getting a new tranny that will surely last another 3-5years. No need to sell. It would be like selling your car after putting a newly rebuild honda engine in your van. You can almost guarantee another 5 years life on your van.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday, but luckily american honda was able to help out.

good luck
