Lighting question

Yes, long lost member here

I'm graduating from college next week and because my degree is in Graphic Design, my school has a portfolio show. All the graduating students create booths to show off their work.

I haven't personally seen the venue our portfolio show will be at, but I can tell by the pictures and by reports from other students that it is very dark inside. I'm going to need to incorportate lighting into my backdrop.

What types of bulbs give off very little heat while giving a bright, white light? I'm concerned about the heat because they're going to be right above the backdrop and I'm going to be gluing a printed banner down the side of it (which will be MDF most likely). I don't want the banner to start to have problems, and I'll also be at the booth for six hours so I really don't want to be sweating the whole time The lights will be set up to work as spotlights, so no flourescent tubes.

Thanks for any help! And while I'm at it, anyone know of anyone looking for a graphic designer/production artist in the San Diego area?

Well, if you combine an energy saving light bulb with the right reflector you might very well be able to use it as a spot light. And because 20 Watts of an energy saving lightbulb compares to about 100 Watts of a regular one you don't have to worry so much about the heat.

Otherwise you might want to look into diode spotlights.

Ikea has some little compact fluorescent reflector lamps. They are about the size of an R-14. They are replacement lamps for the clamp on goose neck fixures they sell. Regular incandesecent R-14s come in 25 & 40 watts. The size of the screw in base is between a standard light bulb and a candelabra base. The color temperature of the compact fluorescent at Ikea is really good. Much better than the ones at Home Depot.
