Smile Pax Tire Incident

This is all about safety, and up to today I kept my mouth shut about people bitching about PAX.

04/24/07 15,300 miles

Well today actually this afternoon I had a blow out rear passenger tire, I went from 37 PSI to 0 in a matter of 30 seconds, and I got several MID warnings and after hearing the tire flat and having to apply extra pressure to the wheel I knew something had happened. I pulled off, and sure enough it was flat, it was resting on some inside ring. I called HONDA care as I thought they would want to tow it in to the dealer, which was 30 miles away I was in remote area (IDA, MI) for those of you know that may know the area. Oh no you can drive it flat up to 150 miles and going 50 mph. When you get to the dealer have them call us. Okay dokey went to dealer and after hanging out for 90 minutes I was gone with a bill due of $0 new tire, rim and some gel pak

So Yeah maybe replacing tires because of wear is an issue, but you know what I could have easily went into a ditch today, I could have lost control. The PAX system did what it was designed and it surprised the hell out of me that I was able to drive it all the way to Toledo to Brown.

Do I feel this was a one time jesture kind of thing, NO I have like a 6 year warranty on those rubbers. So beyond Normal wear and tear I get free replacements.

So I would have gladly forked over a deductable or pay a proated amount for the repairs today, hell it saved a life. As I was crusing at 55.. Last time I had a flat on a NON PAX the wheel pulled like hell!

Yup it might cost some bucks to replace under normal wear and tear but hey you want safety dont you?

Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you were safe and the tires did what they were supposed to do.

Whew! Glad everything worked as designed and everyone walked away safely...

but.... that's what the PAX is all about. That "some inside ring" thing is what makes the PAX different from ordinary run flats (which have stiffer sidewalls in the tire itself for support in event of air pressure loss).

At least now you know (I'm actually very suprised you didn't know in advance) that you can keep on driving that baby right on back to your PAX equipped Honda or Michelin location - after a quick stop, as you did, to check everything out of course.

Was it a simple rapid deflation (flat tire) or complete disintegration of the tire?

Sounds like a pretty positive experience to me, for sure. If somebody can make a runflat tire that handles and wears as well as any other tire, we will truly be set as consumers on this issue.

2 things..

The reason why I called HONDA care cause I wanted to save what ever I could from the tire, I didnt want to have the attiude that well this customer drove on a flat causing more damage.

I knew I could drive 150 miles but I just didnt want to go that route if I can save HONDA a buck or two.

"Your HONDA PAX is designed for you to drive up to 150 miles going no faster than 50MPH."

The tire didnt seperate from the rim, but you can definately see the wear on the side of the tire that it was ridden flat.

Well, now it even makes less sense. When it seemed you were unaware that you could just keep driving (after a quick safety check) it seemed odd, but understandable... yet now you say you knew you could drive on for all those miles, but chose not to, to consider saving "whatever you could from the tire" and to try to "save HONDA a buck or two"? And I have no idea why you think Honda would give you attitude about "this customer drove on a flat causing more damage"? I don't get it...

From your original post it doesn't appear that you were worried about saving 'a buck or two' or the 'wear and tear' and you seemed genuinely surprised that you were able to drive 'all the way to Toledo to Brown', and didn't seem to know what the 'some inside ring' was...

Again very glad that things worked out A-OK, and no one was hurt, and that the van didn't pull hard after the flat...

It just made me scratch my head that you felt the need to call HONDA to get 'approval' to do what the wheels/tires were designed to do. You mentioned "they did what they were designed to do" alluding to keeping control after the blowout, and that's a part of it with the support ring, but what they were really designed to do is let you keep on moving, as you posted in your reply. But then you stopped your van and called HONDA, actually expecting to be sent a tow truck, rather than simply and confidently doing what HONDA had already pre-approved you to do with your PAX equipped van when you bought it - drive on for however many miles to get to a service center and/or home.

This is what I was referring to about my surprise in your approach to this experience, and what appeared to be your lack of knowledge in what the system was made to do (and all the more surprised given your usual thoroughness in your posts and overall stressing of safety, it didn't make sense). We can only go by what we're reading...

I'm sure Mr. Honda himself might even have been offended (tongue in cheek) that his people put alll that effort installing PAX on your Touring down there in 'Bama, then finding that you weren't willing to use it for it's intended purpose without thinking you had to check in first and get permission...

Anyway, no offense, but it just wasn't adding up as typed... and next time, if there is a next time, definitely stop as you did, do a safety check, but then... keep on truckin'

I agreed and I was concerned since I was on a gravel county road, with 7 bags of mulch in the rear cargo area. Since it was the rear passenger side, I just didnt want to have an issue. So Ive learned that no matter what weight you may have, or if u happen to be towing, the tire is designed to do its job regardless. So if your able to stop and do a quick check, otherwise drive it home and or honda dealership within 150 miles.

Now the question would be, could honda ever figure out how many miles you actually went? I think it might be possible since MID detects loss of pressure, wonder if its stored in the computer... Interesting

Thanks for the feedback

It was the first time I had a PAX incident so I was just overly cautious...

I guess one thing that didn't add up for me, either, was this:

Last time I had a flat on a NON PAX the wheel pulled like hell!

What kind of car was that? I've had and seen a couple flats (that happens with age...age of ME, that is ).

I've seen a car (midsize sedan) immediately in front of me have a front tire completely disintegrate on the highway (75mph) on I-10 in Arizona. Naturally, I changed the lady's tire for her. She said she just felt some thumping, and pulled over. Nothing unusual.

I've had a tire rapidly deflate while doing something stupid...powersliding through an uphill sweeper. Young and stupid. A little lean into the dead tire, and a little more slide than I wanted, but nothing too difficult given the ridiculous circumstances I had put myself into.

The topper....my wife picked up a huge nail in one of the original Michelin Symmetry's on our 2002 Ody while heading down the highway from a town up north (65mph, crosswinds). She should've called me, and I would've done the change. She just drove on that flat, wearing off all the nomenclature on the sidewalls of the tire! She said she did not even notice it. Even ran into town, did some shopping ... ... doggoneit, wifey-pooh, do you even look at your car before getting into it??? Yeesh.

I think what you (and I) suspect is that is
Just misinformation to scare non-PAX users.

Thanks for sharing your story, I'm glad to read nobody was hurt.

I'm still researching the van and this is the first thread I've read about the tires performing their 'run flat' claim. I would have been a little hesitant to drive it in too!

The GA DOT is doing some work on Highway 74 near my house, and my mom and I were driving home one day and we ran over a nail. Sure enough, the PAX worked and my dad was able to drive to and from work the next day AND all the way to Gwinnett Place Honda to get the tire replaced.
