Flashing "D" & Ext Warr Question

Brand new to your site! Just started seeing a flashing "D" on panel that continues to flash even in park. I've made the appt to check it out but fear it is the big "T" problems that I've read so much about - it is a 2002 Odyssey w/66,000 mi. Just lately I have noticed transmission ever so slightly lurching. When I purchased it used 30,000 mi I bought the "Honda Care" policy that covers 7 yrs/100,000 mi. Am I going to be crying when they tell me that even my extra coverage won't cover this transmission problem. I did not do the 60,000 (?) scheduled maint - will they say it is my fault? I just want to be prepared for my appt this Thursday. Need your help!!! Has anyone used this extended warranty w/o problems . . . is it as easy as they say? THANKS!

The transmission gets it's fluid replaced at 45k (normal service) 30k is severe. You can only hope that your lack of service does not effect your warranty coverage. The 60k service is just a minor service (oil change, tire rotation, visual check) with the addition of the engine ad cabin filters. Both of those filters you can easily replace yourself. At your mileage you should also be looking to replace the brake pads. Probably both front and rear. use Honda pads. You have been warned.

Almost positive that the 45k scheduled service was performed. I thought 60k was a big one too . . . glad to be wrong! Thanks for the info! Any issues with extended warranties not living up to their end of the bargain???

Nope. My 2002 (currently 63K mile) has 7yr/100K HondaCare that takes care of everything. The dealer (AutoWest in Fremont, CA) is as nice as dealers can be.

About transmission, starting about 2 months ago, my wife, the principle driver of the van, complained about harsh shifting. Neither she nor I could reliably recreate the symptom so I contributed the harsh shifting to the way she drove.

That was until a week ago, when I was driving back from San Diego to No. Ca. A stretch of 20 miles on Fwy 5 past 152 junction was under construction so traffic moved about 20 - 40 mph. I noticed the van hesitated and shuddered when it tried to shift at about 35 mph (in and out of OD I guess). I now can reliably recreate the symptom if I try to maintain that speed. The van will shift in and out of OD and every time, it shudders.

Yesterday I dropped the van off AutoWest. I got a call back that they could not find any code stored in the van's computer, nor could they reproduce the symptom. So I came down and did a road test with a technician. He then verified that there was definitely a problem with the transmission.

So today they ordered a recon'ed transmission, a new PCM and a transmission fluid cooler. They should be at the dealership tomorrow or the day after. I was told that whatever they replaced would carry a 3yr/36K mile warranty.

I follow a somewhat rigid maintenance schedule: oil/filter change and tire rotation every 5K miles, transmission fluid change every 15K miles. But the dealer has never asked me about it.

Not changing three and a half quarts of transmission fluid at 30k or 45 k is NOT going to kill a transmission at 60k. Honda has serious problems with both the 4 and 5 speed transmissions in the 99 to 04 vans. They half hearted stood up with the 99-01 four speeds but have brushed off the 02 to 04 problems. If maintenance is brought up by rhe dealer service shop just tell them it is all done. Don't volunteer information for them to use against you. The Honda Care should cover the transmission without any questions.

Thank you so much for the info!!! I feel like I need to be prepared so I don't get taken advantage of at the dealer. Your replies are much appreciated!!!

I agree that fluid changes alone will not prevent a Odyssey transmission from failing. However, maintenance should be done. It's no fun, but neither is cleaning the toilet. However they both need doing. Do keep the paperwork from the services in a file. It really helps at times like this. Not that you should be sharing as William Wiles points out, but it's good to know where you're at. As my mechanic used to say, "remember your vehicle before it reminds you"
