Spare Tire- I am ashamed of Myself

I have had my van since oct of 2003 and never looked for the spare. We are leaving for vacation and my tires are no longer new, but still have some life. So I decided to check the spare...

Where the fock is it??? I looked under, inside and every fockin where...

So I did what every man dreads..I opened the glove box and took out the manual.......

And sonofabitch.....isn't that sucker in the floor. So I figured I'd check the pressure and be done with it......Well not going to happen..

This thing is a pain in the ass to get to (when you got kids **** in the van) and the valve stem faces down......Not too bright. So I took it out to find it only had 25psi and pumped her up. And then tried to get it back in and lined up so the bolt would go in...Another not so godd of an Idea Honda...

After my frustration went away....I thought...not a bad place to have a spare..Then it hit me...When on vacation with 6 people and luggage, if you do have a flat..where in the hell are you going to put the flat 16 inch wheel and tire

Have a good day..I am sure this is not new to 95% of you

I knew it was located there but....

I did the exact same thing last week on my 2002 (132K) for the first time only I wasn't going on vacation. What a pain in the azz without any kids or any luggage in the van.

Alternative location

Imagine it's pooring with rain, you're loaded to the hilt from a camping weekend and you have a flat. On most vehicles you have to unload all, yes ALL, the stuff out of the back of the car to access the spare. Remember, it's pooring down, so all your stuff gets wet in addition to you getting wet replacing the spare. This would not be the case with the Ody as the spare tire is always accessible even if you have the back fully loaded up. True, it's akward to get to behind the front seats, but Honda could not put it anywhere else with the space requirements of the magic seat. Placing it in the back is automatically excluded due to the magic seat which is a feature we all appreciate. Anyway, reading your manual you would see that not only is a bag provided for the flat, but there is a mounting location where you can fix your full size flat in the back to make it secure in case of an accident. See the little carpet flap about 2/5 of the way from the left, just as you go over the lip from the magic seat well to below the seat when it is opened up. You reuse the bolt that holds the spare down to fix it securely in the back.

Yep, problem has been fixed in 05+ ... now the spare is in the back sidewell .... which you can't open unless you unload everything in the rear.
Oh, the flat one ... simple, leave everything in the rear compartment on the road and put the tire in the rear storage area.

What do these people think ? We buy a van and LEAVE IT EMPTY ?

I guess PAX was the solution for that one.
(I can hear the PAX people laughing now)

I thought the bag was to put your wife in when you stick her on the roof rack, as long as she's not over the weight limit. At least she's dry. She'll get over it eventually. Then roll the flat tire over to the passenger door--easy in and out. The wife gets to come back in when you get the tire fixed. No problem, right?

Thanks for the reminder! It's been a while since I checked the air pressure in the spare of our 2002 Ody.

A few random thoughts about the spare tire storage location . . . .
It seems as if the spare tire could be engineered to be in a nice accessible location - but then it would be taking up other more valuable space. Let's see, there might be enough room for the spare tire to stand up placed between the two front seats. Not sure how it could be anchored but it would be less hassle to get it out if needed. One big disadvantage, it would be taking up valuable space.

I've had several vehicles which have the spare mounted under the vehicle with a cable and crank device. These systems work but are also a hassle. Checking the air pressure in these means raising the vehicle or getting dirty.

I absolutely agree. The location of the spare in the 2nd gen Ody's has it's disadvantages. But if I put on my engineer's hat, I'm unable to find a better location.

Now off I go to check the air pressure of the spare tire.

I checked my sister's o4 spare yesterday..it too had 20lbs or so of pressure. This removal went much smoother than the first. I am gonna have to say after further thought.....Not a bad place at all for a spare. I too had several vehicles with the spare under the car......Not much fun to change....

I think the spare placement on my 2k Ody is about the best you can ask for. It stays clean and free of rust assuming a child hasn't spilled multiple drinks in there. I had Caravans with the tire underneath the rear, what a nasty place to get it down from assuming the mechanism still works. Also, I looked under there one day and the tire was missing, just a rusty ended cable sitting there. Imagine if you were on the side of the highway only to find out you lost your spare 100 miles ago. Luckily I was in my driveway.

The trick of wrapping the spare in a big beach towel and storing it in the valve-up position without the hold-down screw makes any use of the spare (air checks, flat replacements) much easier. When one considers how often one actually USES the spare, it is a pretty good location.

I check our spare tire pressure every couple of months, so I've gotten pretty good at it. Without getting into the issue of whether this is a good location or not, here's what I do:

--Slide the front seats forward a bit, if you recline them much, you may have to shift them more upright.

--Slide the middle seats all the way back.
-
-Remove the floor mat by folding it from each side toward the center. Then you flip it over into the space between the two middle row seats (assuming you configure them that way).

--Lift the cover and fasten the handy clip to the grab bar on the back of the driver's seat to hold it open.

--Remove "dog dish" (gotta love that term--new to me)

--Undo the bolt after noting its position.

--Lift the spare out of the well (I then take it out of the car to inflate it)

--Replace the spare and screw the bolt back in (a flashlight can help to make sure you have it aligned right.

--Close up.

It is important to do this periodically, as the spare will typically lose several pounds of pressure over just a couple of months.

Good luck!
