The “PRACTICAL” Universal GPS Mount

Problems:
* Got a Magellan 2200T GPS
* The vacuum suction windshield mount from factory can obstruct view (safety issue). Also windshield mount is illegal in some states (California is one of them).
* Need a holder for multiple uses: PDA, cell phone, GPS etc.
* Multiple cars so need a holder that can move from car to car quickly (The vent mount is difficult to remove from the vent!)
* Possibility of theft so need something that can be hidden quickly (under seat for example) when going into the shopping mall etc.
* The Vent Mount can mar the AC Vent finish if used a lot; plus it blocks the flow of air.
* The Cupholder mount from ebay is $20 + $8 shipping (expensive for nothing) and is 5" tall so it is not only expensive but also "wobbly" at the base, so I need something shorter and stable.

Solution:
* Buy a "Victor Butt Bucket" (for cigarette butts); I got it at local Ace Hardware for $1.00. You can also buy it on ebay.
* Drill 2 holes for zip ties as shown in picture.
* Buy the "Universal Vent Mount" from ebay for $8 + $7 shipping (see pic); but ignore the suction and dash kit, use only the vent mount.
* Using zip ties, strap the "Universal Vent Mount" on the "Butt Bucket" as shown.
* In the car, use a piece of cloth or paper towel to make sure the bottom is "wedged" in for stability.

*The nice thing about this device is that:
- It is an inexpensive solution
- It can be rotated to the passenger side in 2 seconds so the passenger can use the
GPS.
- It can be hidden quickly (under the seat) at shopping mall to prevent theft
- It is installed quickly (5 seconds max)
- It is stable (I tested with hard cornering, no problem at all)
- It does not block AC Vent air flow
-It can hold many devices (PDA, GPS etc.) because it is adjustable

-Plus......the "cup portion" alone (without the lid) can be used for cell phone, coins etc.)

Anyway, thought I'd share this little tip on the The "Practical" Universal GPS Mount with you guys/gals....inexpensive and practical....

Umm, Sorry, cnn... Personally, and yet my own opinion which doesn't really mean a lot to anyone else, if I were a passenger in your vehicle and saw this "setup", I think I'd laugh with something like "Gerry Rigged" on my lips.

Sorry, I damned sure wouldn't put this in my >$36k ride.

If you're gonna do it, do it right. Practical can only go so far in my book.

Good luck...

Agree but

Ha.........agree with you, the "right" way is in dash but 2 problems:
1. expensive $1-2K
2. when car is sold the GPS goes with it too.

The other "right" way you mention is a permament mount which involves drilling the dash and screws etc. etc.....I do not want a permanent mount because it mars the dash.

Our need for a GPS is minimal: the van is used to take kids to school and for local shopping so....... 99% of the time we do not need a GPS (a source of distraction that can cause accidents and fatalities.......IMHO).

So we basically need the GPS for long trips, once or twice a year. Or going to strange places locally.

This serves us well.......sorry could not make you happy but I am sure many in this forum will find this useful....

BTW, I don't think this looks "cheap" (perhaps the only cheap part is the piece of cloth to wedge it in, you can substitute it with a piece of cloth that matches the center console color..........)

I personally like it, it keeps it secure and is easy to move.

What do I care what others would think?

I am more inclined to have convenience over pride...............

Why does the in dash gps have to go with the car when it is sold? It can easily be taken out, and the factory radio can be put back in.

Yep, you read my mind. I am a practical person...and IMHO, the cup is black and black is beautiful....it matches the GPS holder.

Just did a test with hard cornering, the GPS is rock solid.

Garmin sells a plastic disk with double sided tape that sticks to your dash and then you can hook your suction cup mount to that. I have the built in GPS in the Odyssey but I have a Garmin for my truck and I had the Street Pilot 2610 and it had a nice dash mount but the unit went out on me so I switched to a Nuvi 650 and it came with the suction mount which I think is cheesy but fortunately they sell an alternate mount that fit right into the Street Pilot mount base that I already had stuck on my dash.

is a good solution for switching between cars
but personally imo is ugly , not to mention is hard to see when you on the road , it can be danger , because your eyes is not on the road, instead to the cupholder.
you can do other solution better than this.

Alright,

Just did a hard cornering, the "home made" cupholder GSP mount holds it very well, the GPS is rock solid during hard cornering.

To address your view "not to mention is hard to see when you on the road , it can be danger , because your eyes is not on the road, instead to the cupholder." on the road," ....listed causes of driver's distractions that can cause accidents:

- fatigue (lack of sleep)
- emotionally unstable
- day dreaming
- alcohol, drugs
- talking to passengers
- talking on cell phone.
- drinking coffee
- doing makeup in the car (I see lots of this in AM trafific)
- playing with radio/CD player buttons
- looking at GPS

The key thing about GPS is use it ONLY when going to unfamiliar places (locally or far away from home). I see alot of people use for daily routine drive from home to work because they like the GPS toy.

Also, when I glance at the GPS, it is a quick glance (similar to a glance looking at the FM stereo to see which channel I am on).

When I need to program the GPS, I stop the car somewhere like a gas station etc.

IMHO:
1. Glancing at a GPS for your current position is not distracting.

2. PROGRAMMING a GPS is a distracting job....so stop thje car while doing programming.

this is not an in dash gps, its one of those portable,

the gps has to go with the car when sold is because its mmounted to the car.

cnn, my cousin works with magellan, and i get free gps stuff for my gps but i have a limit, but i donot wanna use it because it kinda sux for him to go through all the trouble. my gps was stolen and since he can only get two, i had one and he had one, he had to talk to his boss to get another and it took several days to convince him. kinda sux for him.

another type of windshield mount:
i have the magellan RM 3500t and i got this mount that doesnt have a rod that bends. i think you can find them on their website but it had two knobs, one control the movement of up and down, and the other controls side to side. but tis very nice, and small about 4in by 4in if it was a cube. and can extend to 8in and its durable. EDIT: uit doesnt jiggle or jump when drivign too. you can also discontect it easily since there is a two piece mount, the mount to the windshield and the adapter.

it something like this but i have one for a the rm3500t and the one i got was directly from the magellan not ebay.

there is also an adhesive disk that stick onto the dash and you can stick the windshiel mount onto it.

even though its illeagal, police wont catch you for it, i use it all the time to look for stores to sell my products to. and the ody has a huge windsheild so i dont think it would obstruct your view, just place it low near the dash it it would be find.
