Question Goodyear ComforTreads vs stock Michelins

I know the LX4's were pretty awful in the snow last winter, and I was just wondering if anyone had tried out the Goodyear ComforTreads yet. They supposedly have a better snow rating than the stock Michelins. The LX4's seem to do alright otherwise.

I put a set of Goodyear Triple-treads on Wifey's Subaru, and they are a huge improvement over the stock Crapenza's, not only in the snow, but in all aspects. I thought the ComforTreads might be have a similar improvement. Too bad they don't make the Triple-treads in the size for the van. I think they do for the previous generation, though.

From what people have said, the Comfortreads have a softer sidewall resulting in a slow steering response, but thats the tradeoff for a quiet comfortable ride.

Happy ComforTred owner

I put a set of ComforTreds on this summer before our big cross country trip (see my post on this) and was very happy with handling and noise. I'll let you know how they work in the snow since this was a concern of mine. The last few years we would rotate Michelin Artic Alpins in every winter but that is a nuisance and the wife suggested that we just find a good all season tire and be careful in the ice. (Our Bridgestone Blizzaks were great for ice but they wore poorly on dry pavement and really would stink.)

So, any updates on the winter handling of the Comfort treads? I'm getting ready to replace the OEM's and want something that actually works in snow.

Winter handling

The ComforTreds did very well in our winter here. Plenty of cold (sub zero) and plenty of snow last season (over 80").

They do not handle as well as dedicated winter tires but are good enough for our family that we will be using them throughout the year. Mind you when the tread wears low we will buy new tires long before they are down to the legal limit.

Thanks a lot for the update. Thats just the "real world" experience I was hoping for. We got just over 100" here last winter and the OEM tires were awful.

Really the safest way to go is a dedicated Winter set of tires, Bizzaks come highly recommended on these forums. The Tire Rack has a comprehensive list of new and older "snow" capable tire sets and can supply ready to mount options. With our brutal freezing temps last season, I am about to get a set soon before the rush gets started.
