Unhappy Massive Oil Leak

My '95 just sprung an oil leak from the "can" that the oil filter is screwed into. It looks like one of the seams let go. Guy at the oil change place says he has never seen anything like it. I went underneath and saw it spewing out oil when the engine was running!

Got it towed to the dealer and will see what's up tomorrow. Anyone heard of this happening before?

The dealer replaced an O Ring in the oil filter adapter. $100 Cdn parts and labour. Whew! Good thing it didn't happen on the highway on a hot day. Also, kudos to my wife for noticing the light being on.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a '96 Accord and I'm sure its the same setup, so if I start pouring oil from that area I know where to look first.

Happened to my 96 Ody a couple of days ago while on a trip to St. Louis. Engine went dry.... good thing we we're able to park on a hotel..... towed it to a nearby dealership and was told a seal was busted..... apparently, it was the O ring in the oil filter adapter too. Parts was less than $5 but labor spent was 2 hours so we paid roughly around $145

Funny thing was that we saw a 99 Ody EX with 60K miles for $12K in the dealer lot and bought it. Left our 96 Ody in the dealer as we will be moving to St. Louis by next week and just used the 99 Ody to get back home (about 5 hours drive). Got a free bug deflector, cross bars and int/ext detailing when I go back. Also got a 1 year/12K miles limited warranty. I guess 2 minivans isn't that bad since I have 3 small kids........

Could you look on our invoiceand let me know the part # of the O ring they used. I took a quick trip to my local Radio Shack on Xmas Eve and sae a trail of oil I had left after I pulled into my driveway. I had left a trail of oil from the front of my house to Radio Shack all they way back home. When I looked under the van oil was spilling out of the filter area, so I figure it maybe the same thing.

By the way I live in STL, what dealership did you go to?

Left the invoice in the car but will post it as soon as I can.

The dealer was Dave Mungenast. BTW, I get lifetime free car wash too They were very good to deal with. Other dealers were packed and could only look at my car after Christmas but this dealership took time to look at it since we were from out of town.

I lived in Clayton area before (around 1999) for about a year when I was working for Enterprise-Rent-A-Car (I think it was off Brentwood). Bought my first car ('00 Civic EX) from Dave Mungenast too. I remember them well as they gave the car for $100 over invoice where as others were selling it at MSRP I guess they really are the biggest Honda dealer in St. Louis.

Macky, did you find that the inside of the '99 was like climbing into a Winnabago, compared to the Generation 1 ? ?

Both Odyssey's have their advantages..... but since we added a new addition to tha family, the bigger Odyssey fits our needs right now. I still feel that the Gen 1 Odyssey is more fun to drive though.

Part number for the O ring is 91316-PT6-003 which costs $4.34.

Wow. My '95 just developed the problem big time at 140K miles. Oil just pours out when running. I put it on jack stands and can see it is a constant stream. I've been smelling oil for the last three days and didn't loose all the oil, so think it was leaking less yesterday. It only leaks when running.

I'm wondering if it has been leaking at a lesser rate for a long time as the leak path looks like it goes straight to the ground. The car has been 'consuming' oil for a couple of years and I now wonder if it hasn't just been leaking out at higher RPMs when the oil pressure is highest.

I'll fix it and report back in a couple of months as to whether the consumption has decreased.

We might want to start recommending an O-ring replacement as preventative maintenance at timing belt change time.

Thanks!!!

John Q

Thanks to the knowledge on this site, I've just replaced my '98 Odyssey's oil cooler o-ring successfully. That saves me the $92 that a shop wanted to do it. The dealer wanted me to make an appointment and to see it before quoting a price, even though I specifically stated the task. I had been getting a 4" diameter oil spots on the driveway. Autozone rented me a 30mm (1/2 drive) socket. I had to use a breaker bar to start, and once that initial tug let loose there was no more resistance. The o-ring part number has evolved to 91316-PE7-730, and costs $2.70, and for me it went right in place with no freezing or grease or Hondabond. So now I should be good for another 10 years.

I did mine a couple of years ago too, very easy to do if you have some basic tools. The $100 you save can buy the sockets required also.

Local Autozone stores loan out 30 mm "axle" nut 1/2" drive sockets for free. You gotta put down the full price of it as collateral though.

This is a fairly easy job except for access under the car. The bolt will come off easily, remember its soaking in oil already. There are a lot of write-ups and talk on here including mine. My story of the leak was a really terrible one.

Anyway, you can definitely do this yourself. No need to pay the labor. If the o-ring is big and it doesnt stay in you can freeze it to shrink it. That's what I did. A few people will have this issue now that its winter.

I think this thread saved me an engine

And the wife thinks I am a mechanic too! I shouldn't have done it so quick. I could have got more beer drinking time out of it.
