Major oil leak

Tuesday evening we went to a restaurant about ten miles away. As we were entering the parking lot, I noticed the oil warning light starting to flicker. When I checked the dipstick, there was no oil reaching the bottom of the dipstick. Checking underneath, I found oil dripping from the left (alternator) end of the engine. I had the van towed to my favorite (non-dealer) mechanic. When I got home, I saw a puddle of oil in the driveway and a trail of oil down the street.

Next morning when I went to the mechanic's, he showed me where the seal had come loose on the balance shaft. Since I am close to 320,000 km (200,000 miles), we decided to change the timing belt, balance shaft belt and the water pump at the same time. As a preventive measure, we decided to replace the O-ring between the engine oil cooler and the engine block where the oil filter mounts.

When I picked up the parts at the Honda dealer, the parts guy suggested I install a seal retainer kit they use on older four cylinder Accords. It cost $5.34 CDN plus tax and the part number is 06923-P0A-306. Simple to install. Three hours of labour and we are back on the road.

If I had known about this seal retainer kit, this might have been avoided. No engine damage.... I attribute that to the use of Mobil 1 synthetic oil. However, since I recently started using Mobil 1 oil filters, I am wondering if that increased the pressure in the oil system and pushed the seal out of place.

Any ideas on this????????

Common problem. You're car should've have a recall performed on it. They used to tow them in 3 and 4 a day when I worked for Honda.

I have my mechanic in my driveway right now changing my valve gasket, distributor gasket, crankshaft seal, etc. It's a $350 job by his estimate. Are you saying that I should have just taken it to the dealer for a free fix? It's been losing about a quart every two months.

While he's there, I decided to have him also change the timing belt (86,000 miles). That's another $100, but it would have been $200 by itself. I'm about to buy a new Ody soon, probably this month. But, whoever buys this Ody will hopefully appreciate that I've been keeping on top of the maintenance.

Yes, the balance shaft seal had a recall on it. You should check with your dealer so see if yours fell within the recall range. They used to reimburse customers who payed to have it done before the recall, I don't know if they'll pay now though.

Well, it's only a $5 part, so there isn't any point in trying to track down a reimbursement.

Also, my mechanic told me that I already had one and he's replacing it. I had an oil leak about a year ago too. Maybe he added it then. I don't know.

was it a metal retainer that held the seal in place? That the part the dealer will install.

I told him the name of the part and said it was some kind of retainer Honda installs as part of a recall. He seemed to know what I was talking about.

I've been trying to find details of this recall because I've taken mine into the dealer for an oil leak that appears to be coming from there and had no luck with them doing anything.

Anyone have a link or ref number I can use to find it?

EDIT: Search is a wonderful thing, but you never know where it will take you! I just realized I'm in the wrong forum for a 2000 Ody Bye...
