Unhappy ..big puddle of oil.

It's 20f degrees outside (cold for us) and the Ody is sporting a true "horror story" scene in the driveway. From the front door, we can see it sitting at the top of the driveway (sun rise behind it) with a large oblung puddle of fresh oil beneath it.

The oil is barely hitting the dipstick, but it is registering. The van ('96 Ody) has not had the hood open in about 3 weeks. We've had a winter storm come through in the last two days, but nothing else unusual to mention.

Last night the oil light began blinking as my wife made the last few blocks home.

When it gets up around 30 outside, I plan to go investigate. Any ideas where to start???

(the oil, from quick examination, seems to be coming from "mid - to left (when facing) side", so more over on the tranny side, rather than the timing cover side. The puddle is fairly large in the driveway, so obviously it didn't need pressure to leak out in the end.)

Thanks,
ME

*****
New Info........there is a fairly solid trail going all the way down the drive, then forming a small (fist size) puddle before heading down the street. This tells me (considering two trips yesterday) that the van was actually leaking badly as she left for first outing, of two, yesterday afternoon. Odd that the oil light only blinked upon return last night AND the puddle in drive is so large. (yes, she does notice lights very well)

The balance shaft oil seal has popped out. It was an issue with the F22 and F23 motors. Now you need to tow it to a repair shop.
Looking at a new seal and a retainer that holds it in. Also, get your tech to do the timing and balance shaft belts as they are now soaked in oil and ruined.

There was a recall for installing the retainer, yours sounds like it was never done.

....in addition, it actually was NOT registering on the dipstick. I added 1 quart and moved the Ody forward 5 feet, then added two more quarts to register on the stick. Also, the 'new' puddle has begun and is more to the right of center than I first thought.

I assume this seal you speak of is the one that is part of the good "timing belt kits" and the one that comes with the new 'retainer'. I was looking at purchasing a TB kit and remember text saying "...aftermarket retainer for...." most likely what you are referring to.

The dealer is 45 miles away and our only local Honda specialist shop got consumed by a 'big dealer' 6 months ago.

Ahh......this too shall pass.

ME

******************
Started it for about 30 seconds, now the puddle is growing like the 'Blob'. 99k miles. Guess the decision on doing the timing belt is made for me.

this just happened to me last week. and i had my dealer fix it.
the dripping of the oil is from a broken O ring in the oil filter adapter. it drips furiously whneever the engine is running

this thread tells you all about it.

...hipermax.....you might be my hero for the day. At least I'll thank you for a good night's sleep.

I'm freezing (25 here) but I couldn't resist crawling under the van real quick. The oil filter 'area' is soaked with oil and the area around the timing belt it perfectly dry. I'm going to let the oil pan (one solid chunk of ice) thaw out and get back under there tomorrow, but right now it looks like it IS the oil filter holder. I'll now for sure after I crank it, but unless there is something else above that area, it must be that filter.

long time looker, first time as member

mine just failed on thursday night.

big puddle too.

o-ring had split. bought o-ring at dealer 91316-PT6-003 for $2.58.

took oil filter off, used a 30 mm socket to remove the through bolt that holds cooler to block.

new o-ring is slightly larger than the groove on the cooler.

you need to be sure that the o-ring stays in the groove or it will be immediately damaged.

i chilled mine in the freezer to shrink the new o-ring and then stuck it on with some wheel bearing grease to hold it in place.

About 1 hour, the leak was stopped and the van had a new oil change.

good luck fixing yours.

cole - this is why I love this forum!

Great pictures. Exactly what I was needing. I planning to order a manual from Helms tomorrow. Biting the bullet on the $62. ($87 with shipping and tax) Also, I WILL need to snag a 31mm.

Thanks a million.

Mind Eddy

mine is a 96 also. I used a 30mm socket and it fit fine.

Stussy Cole

great photos, that is exactly the same way my o-ring failed. I started thinking too about what some of the other o-rings might look like, and how many are easy to replace like this one and how many are difficult to replace.

I do think that with the experience and knowledge on this board that the Gen 1's can continue for a long time.

I can double check the size socket that I used. I seem to remember getting the 31mm because the 30mm was out of stock. Anyway, it worked, just took my time and made sure I was as seated on the bolt as I could be.

Good write up guys!!! As a tech for a local Honda dealer, I've never seen that oil seal go, but now I plan to change my seal at the next oil change for preventive purposes..

By the way, how much miles did your vans have before the seal went out??? Just curious..I have 101,765 so far..

thanks in advance!!

mine is a 96, failed at 103,851. This was our first big cold front of the winter (temps in the upper 20's) and the o ring may not have been able to adapt to the cold.

the o ring was very hard, not flexible at all and split just like the photo in stussycole's writeup.

the parts man at the honda dealer said he was selling a lot of these o rings lately. seems that a lot of 2.2 engines have this cooler between the filter and the block.

tech 126 if you know of other common failures from your work at a honda dealer please let us know.

Mine had about 164K when I noticed and replaced it. My oil sending unit was also leaking.
