odyssey surge - big issue - anybody post if you had this problem

I was at a stop light though and it wanted to get going, so i put it in neutral and it almost stuck at red-line (about 6krpm) and stayed there, put it in park, turned off engine and on restart, no issue again...very strange, found something very close logged as a complaint on nhtsa.org - geez, sometimes it sucks that the drivers have to be matlock on these kinds of issues.

Not sure if what I experienced tonight was the same type of thing:
After getting on the freeway and getting up to speed (speed limit is 70, but I usually won't go faster than 65 in this particular spot), I let off the accelerator a bit and the engine?trans was still racing and the rpm's were still higher than they should be indicating that it wasn't shifting into 5th gear like it usually would by this point. This stretch of freeway is one I frequent so I am familiar as to how the van should be working.
I have been having issues with what I now fear is the transmission, but it has typically been at slower speeds...
I'm just about at the end of my detective thread with this one

Hmmm. Just tonight we were sitting in the driveway at a firends with the car in park and I got out and noticed the engine was revving up and down, up and down. Never had this behavior before - 2002 Ody -- when we drove back home it was acting "odd" but my wife was driving so I can't explain it any better.

we were at a stop light, on Christmas day no less, and the van wanted to go through the light, luckily I reacted quickly, but the brake pedal was really working, you could feel it fight the van from going forward, then put it in neutral, rpm's flew up to 6000 and stayed there, with a noise from the engine that an engine shouldn't make - can't even really explain the noise, put it in park, turned it off and waited a couple of sec's then re-start and here we are, no codes, nothing, just a really bad taste in my mouth.

Mobial, the behavior being described here concerns 05+ Odys with drive by wire accelerators. Your problem sounds like a known issue with a broken or loose power steering control switch. Could also be an idle air control valve. Take it to the dealer. If it is the power steering switch, you should not have to pay.

thanks egads, I took it over there - based on another thread I thought maybe something to do with the Intake Air Control Valve - and when I got there, there was some kind of EGR recall or something -

I posted in an earlier topic a few weeks ago about a similar issue that my mother experienced in her '06 Ody EXL -- vehicle surged forward without her applying the accelerator. The dealer ran the diagnostic and said nothing was wrong, but I have seen at least three other separate descriptions of the same problem on other discussion boards -- very serious problem if it can't be fixed or Honda won't acknowledge.

I have noticed while at extended stops (in line at the bank, fastfood, etc) that the engine fan cycles on and off constantly. And when it comes on, the van surges forward. It'll run for about 10 seconds, turn off for 7 seconds and just keeps this cycle up. This happens regardless of the a/c being on. Is this normal?

can you get me info on what other boards you saw this on or pm or email me your vin (I will send you myn if you like - we are on the brink of getting rid of this van because I don't want my family to be a statistic for an issue - but want to make sure I have as much proof as I can before I make that step, it wouldn't really be wise to just walk away without letting them try to make it right) -- let me know if you will help, you can email me by using my cp. thanks, and hopefully we can help light the torch to getting this fixed dammit.

because, no, in my opinion, none of the things on this thread seem normal, none of them.

Very similiar problem!

Almost the same day!

Same part of Canada!

Same modle 2005 EX-L!

Boxing day I was at Terminal 3 going up in the parking garage doing about 20km/h and went to stop the van just kept acceleratating. Had the brakes on full and the ABS was just pumping until we came to a stop about 1 van length past the stop sign. Put the van in Park and revs went up to 6K and I shut off the key. Started the van up and then no problem. Luckily there was no one ahead of us.

I did report the incident to Honda as well because I also did not want to be a statistic. They also found no code had registered.

Van had 34,800 Km on it when it occured an it has not occured again although I feel the van now lags on and off like the transmission is dieing ( had it checked - no problem) or the power steering is dieing (had it checked - no problem)

Perhaps there is a problem with the drive by wire in these things!

Taking the beast in for service an A12 service (42,000 Km) and will mention there are others who had the same problems!

Makeshift - Let me know if you have had any luck resolving your problem and which GTA dealer you are dealing with.

I took it into 2 dealerships, in brantford and stratford, not gta, but dealer did a couple of recalls on fuel throttle sensor relay, i had problem with power steering pump, they replaced it, no problems since the surge incident, I keep my camera in van now in case it happens again to get more info for them. they really believe me, just can't find the problem...maybe a camera shot will help, hopefully not after I am wrapped around a tree.

I had civic 01 before and experiencing loss of power. There were days once you step on the gas pedal you could feel the power and most of the days it was very sluggish and does not pick up the power. I could hear big vrooommm but slow response. In other words...power were not consistent everyday. I brought to dealer all said " can not duplicate the problem" I gave up and just lived with it for 2 years. power ok ...power not ok.

I decided to exchanged it to Honda Ody 2003 . I was happy for a year but second year and up to now 2006 with 38k, I experienced the same inconsistent power. I was trying to tell myself that it might be probably on my mind and imagining things..but no...I guess, I am being haunted by Honda's inconsistent power day after day...I could feel, hear and sense that engine's power is changing.

Shouldn't it be that every time of the day, every day of the week and every week of the month, POWER should be consisten???

Any comments is highly appreciated.

I am still surging along...... getting worse day by day.

Steering pump replaced at end of March. Brakes done in June

I think mine is related to the torque converter or transmission, VCM, waiting to see what goes first. Still have 37,000 KM of warranty to have it break.

I asked the dealer about a TSB re the transmission that I found here but it only applies to the USA..... Guess we can't have those problems in Canada
