Check engine light/gas cap

Yesterday the "check engine" light came on. I checked the gas cap and sure enough, it wasn't tightened. I tightened it but the CL light is still on. Does the dealer have to do something to turn it off? Does it go off by itself after a while?
TIA for any help.

i believe you can go to auto zone or some similar place where they have a code reader to reset it.

Does it say check engine or check gas cap? When our gas cap when bad, the message said check gas cap. If it was your gas cap that is causing the issue, it may take several days for the message to clear.

When the CEL comes on the ONLY way to know what caused it is have the code read. Twisting gas cap, kicking the tires, bouncing the bumpers won't fix it. You have to read the codes and then go from there.

In some cases it can be gas cap loose, but also in the emission system a leak from other components can cause the light to come on.

It also can come on for other sensors that have gone bad (out of range, not responding, etc.). Common sensors would be mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensor and many more.

The light is a general systems fault. It's best to go to a dealership or Honda tech with equipment to verify code and then track down the exact fault.

Yes, it can just go off after awhile, but it could be something that would affect your gas mileage or eventually cause the car to do worse.

one thing i noticed is the even with "check gas cap" lights,it almost never lights up and almost always throw a CEL.
Both our ody and bmw did the same thing.

Mine came on due to the gas cap, took it to the dealer, took all of 5 minutes to remedy. Do yourself a favor and take it in just to be sure it isn't something else.

Thanks for all the replies everybody. I'll see if the dealer can look at the van tomorrow (Friday).
Happy Thanksgiving!

I called my dealer this morning (Friday) but the service department is closed until Monday. I'll call then.

I brought the van in and it was the gas cap. Apparently somebody (me!) crossed the threads when putting it back.
Oooops!

Now that's a first. I'd imagine the ratcheting mechanism is defective, hard to believe it wouldn't stop the threading if working properly?
