Hi mem, did you see that signature in the pdf file you posted? why it looks like a cut-n-paste?

Prestontang,

Good question. I noticed that too, but wasn't sure what to make of it, so I decided to go ahead and post the link. (I had seen that letter a while back, and was reminded of it when I saw mention of Valvoline possibly being the manufacturer of Honda’s fluid).

Seems to me that if someone wanted to forge a document they'd go all the way and put a good looking signature there. So I wonder whether the signature has been blurred up as a courtesy to the letter’s author (so it can’t be cut and pasted in some really inappropriate way).

But, I don’t really know – I’ll try and search the e38 board and see if that’s been discussed.

I haven’t tried the Valvoline fluid, but of course I am interested in other peoples experience.

To date I’ve used the Honda stuff but am anxious for an alternative. My local dealer prices are outrageous, and I don’t really like waiting around for fluid to arrive that I’ve ordered over the internet (ordered some a week ago hoping to have it this weekend, but looks like it wasn’t shipped for several days and won’t be here until early next week – oh well). The next time I need to deal with the fluid, I'd like to have the option of using something else besides Honda Z1 - like you, just trying to sort out which one to go with...

Anyway, sorry I don’t know more about that document I linked to – just thought it might be of some interest and stir the conversation a bit.

I found a very similar letter in another forum, but with slightly different wording:

Mem,

The active flush (as I like to call it) is very simple. The Tranny Fluid return line OUT of the cooler in the Radiator is on the Drivers side of the lower radiator. You DC this line and put it up out of the way. Next, fish a 3 ft section of 3/8 rubber hose through the opening in the lower bumper where the fog light would go and connect to the tranny cooler. Place the other end of the hose into a 1 gallon milk jug. Pull your wife away from her favorite book and have her start the car. The fluid will run (FAST) into the milk jug. When jug is about 2/3 full, shut off car. The fluid will continue to flow into the jug for a short while after the car is off that is why you stop at 2/3 full. Now add 4 quarts to the Tranny, get another milk jug and start the car. You do this three times. By doing this method, I feel that you get a better result. If you want, you can drain the pan first and then you only have to fill two jugs vs. three. When filling the tranny after last jug, Pour that last bottle slowly. The Ody Tranny pan is 3 1/2 quarts so be careful not to overfill. I use this method on all the vehicles I have done except Fords which have a small drain plug on the torque converter.

Hope this helps.

Mem,

I forgot to mention, If you have long arms ( I do. I'm 6'4") You can get to the return hose by reaching down to it from under the hood. Look strait down past the battery and you will see a small black hose. If you want I can take a picture. I'm watching a bunch of kids so my wife and her Moms club girls can all get trashed. Other wise you have to remove the plastic shield under the car and get at it that way.

renew82,

Thanks for the tip - I understand what you're saying (no need for a picture, but thanks for offering).

Yep, it's a process. First get married. Then have kids. Then buy a nice van so the wife and kids can flit around in comfort. Then keep yourself occupied (under the guise of getting information about maintaining the van) while the wife and kids are flitting around in comfort!

Thanks again.
