manual.jpg (16058 bytes) The ROSS system is made by Rostra,. It uses microwave technology to "see" behind the vehicle ...

Manuals for the ROSS system can be downloaded here.

Ordered last Friday from Frank at Automotive Safety Technologies for $175 plus shipping.
The works
kit2.jpg (63180 bytes) A closer look
kit3.jpg (62821 bytes) The control module
kit4.jpg (61120 bytes) These brackets need to be cut and formed according to the instructions.
kit5.jpg (61409 bytes) The sensor modules and the audio control unit (next to the brackets).
kit6.jpg (54858 bytes) Two big manuals, but you only use a few pages of each.
brackets.jpg (55911 bytes) Cutting the brackets to size wasn't as hard to do as I thought it would be.
brackets2.jpg (60673 bytes) Here they are shown after shaping. You can order custom brackets for an additional $5 if you don't care to do the cutting and bending yourself.
control.jpg (58560 bytes) The audio volume is adjustable (arrow). The two ports at the lower left are where the power and the LEDs plug in.
led.jpg (40438 bytes) The LED unit. It will mount on the front edge of the cargo light with only the LEDs themselves showing. Very unobtrusive.
control_led.jpg (50448 bytes) The LED assembly and the Audio Control Unit
clip.jpg (47069 bytes) One of the bumper clips that must be removed. There are five above the bumper and three below. Pry up the center to remove.
cover.jpg (36375 bytes) The main bumper bolt cover. There are four of these. Pry them off gently.
cap.jpg (29539 bytes) One of the caps popped out to reveal the trim attachment screw
hookless.jpg (32469 bytes) ....and with the screw and hook removed.
bumperless.jpg (40996 bytes) It's starting to get scary!
styrofoam.jpg (46544 bytes) This styrofoam piece is removed and cut to accomodate the sensors.
sensorloc.jpg (35659 bytes) The right side sensor location...
sensorloc2.jpg (53099 bytes) ...and the left side.
sensorhole.jpg (37476 bytes) The bumper is fairly thick. You have to drill four 11/64" holes one inch back from the edge of the bumper.
bumpercover.jpg (31894 bytes) The bumper skin and the styrofoam piece.
pinclip.jpg (18685 bytes) Half way down the front edge of the bumper is a black pin clip. I pried and pulled until it came out with the bumper as you can see here. With the bumper off it's easy to remove the clip for reassembly.
sensorson.jpg (50998 bytes) The two microwave sensors mounted. They "see" about twelve feet. The center trim piece around the hatch striker is held on by two screws and, on the '01, a bolt. Remove it for easier access to the jack area and wiring.
wirehole.jpg (45330 bytes) This is the hole to pass the wiring to the cabin. There are two layers of steel here and two grommets removed. They don't line up so the other one doesn't show here, , but it's just forward of this one.
wirehole2.jpg (44893 bytes) Things are progressing. Center trim panel is removed to allow the left panel to be swung out.
loks.jpg (29034 bytes) Just two wires to be tied in to the back-up light circuit. 12v and ground. The connector shown was found taped to the main harness. It may be for trailer wiring. Now to close the Scotch-Loks.
controlin.jpg (46958 bytes) The perfect place to mount the control module...
controlin2.jpg (43549 bytes) ...with Velcro! Not included with the kit, but I think it'll hold for years.
wire.jpg (52339 bytes) The entry to the cabin
wire2.jpg (48592 bytes) All tucked up.
trimmed.jpg (49927 bytes) Because it's easily damaged cutting the styrofoam is one of the most time-consuming chores of the whole job. I cut it with a coping saw and a Dremel, but there's gotta be a better way!
trimmed2.jpg (51696 bytes) I used duct tape to stash the wires because cable ties through the holes would have interfered with bumper remounting.
trimmed3.jpg (45048 bytes) The foam would be easily broken, so take your time cutting it.
installed.jpg (45564 bytes) Ready for reassembly.
audio.jpg (27713 bytes) The audio control unit in the jack compartment.
audio2.jpg (24420 bytes) The volume is adjustable by a small screw on the face of the unit, barely visible at about 7 o'clock.
tl.jpg (25228 bytes) Forgot to take pic of taillight coming out. so just look at them backwards. <G>
tl2.jpg (33949 bytes) The taillight assembly is held in by two screws and a clip. The front locating female clip socket is hidden by the connector.
tl3.jpg (33370 bytes) Seeing a picture of the clip would have added to my confidence when disassembling. I didn't know which direction to pull or how hard.
tl4.jpg (39581 bytes) Here 'tis again.
tl5.jpg (36386 bytes) Pull out the grommet to expose the connector.
tl6.jpg (32877 bytes) Here's the male, the grommet, and the female fastener.
ledext.jpg (45790 bytes) 3/05/01 Led extension arrived today. Now to install it.
cargolight.jpg (36639 bytes) The LED will mount on the front edge of the cargo light. Pull the center vinyl headliner trim straight toward you when standing at the hatch. It slides straight out from between the headliner material and the roof.
cargolight2.jpg (34424 bytes) Remove in this direction.
ledinstalled.jpg (54160 bytes) The LED assembly mounted on the front edge of the cargo light.
done.jpg (41837 bytes) All done! Sorry, no bragging rights because nothing shows. Everything seems to work and there were no parts left over.
