Brake light and tail light are controlled by same bulb!

Note to other newbie DIY'ers: the same bulb controls both the tail light AND the brake light. It has 2 filaments, and one or the other may be burned out.

(Maybe this is well-known, but I've not seen this written anywhere (one of the rare times when Google has failed me), and when I had the left brake light burned out, the right tail light burned out and couldn't find the info online, I was THIS CLOSE to taking the van in to my mechanic to have him deal with it. A chance comment by an acquaintance clued me in as to the 2-filament situation. Hope this helps someone!)

Hmmm. I don't see that detail in your write-up. Thanks, though.

    FYI,

All 3 brake bulbs run on separate circuits, if one bulb is burned, the other 2 bulbs will be fine, i.e., not controlled by the failed bulb.

One question: why Honda uses bulb 7443 with 2 filaments as you mentioned?
When the brake light is on, which filament(s) is on, 1 or both filaments...this part I don't know until someone does an experiment.

Good to know. I would guess, based on my experience of my tail light working but the brake light not working, that each light is a different filament.

I just checked my van, see photo:

    * During the day time (HL switch off):
    - All rear lights are off.
    - When brake pedal is pressed, all 3 brake lights are on.

    * At night (HL switch on):
    - Brake Bulb filament #1 and "Running Light" are on on each side.
    - When brake pedal is pressed, all 3 brake lights are on, with the R and L brake lights using filament #2.

    it's a 7443 bulb, which means it's a dual filament bulb.
it's very similar to a 7440 but it's a single filament and have different locking tabs.

Does anyone know if the LED light for 7443 is suitable as replacement? Unlike halogen it doesn't have dual filament.

Do you want your brake lights to work? Then you need dual filament. Does your "LED 7443" have the ability to light low yet get much brighter when the brakes are applied? LEDs don't have filaments, by the way

Thanks Hogan773. Sorry I am aware LEDs don't have filaments.

I was thinking of getting the below, but I suppose it means I won't have any light until I press on the brake.

Multi-filament bulbs have multi-connections. One for each filament and then a common ground. Or sometimes two for each filament where they don't share a common ground. A truly compatible replacement LED bulb will be the same way. Except instead of multiple filaments it will have multiple LEDs or sets of LEDs.

If you google for images of the 7443 bulb you'll see what I mean. Looking at the webpage hungtat posted, it doesn't look like the bulb is a proper replacement for the 7443.

I just bought 1157 LED replacements for my trailer. They have 2 tabs and 2 connection points on the base just the 1157 halogens with the dual filaments.

The LED acts like a dual filament halogen bulb, with its 2 light levels.

If someone is selling an LED equivalent bulb they are selling a bulb that acts like the halogen original. Otherwise it's not an equivalent bulb.

Too bad the LED is so much bigger than the halogen.

I believe (but NOT 100% sure) I got these for my brake lights:

2X High Power 80W 7443 7440 Tail Brake Backup Reverse LED Bulb 6000K White Light | eBay

They work perfect, very visible tail and brighter brake light. It is a drop in replacement with no issues.
Unfortunately, some Ebay sellers often change the listing so even if I have the purchase in my history the actual listing does not exist anymore.
