Question Strange Problem after replacing Transmission Range Sensor

After replacing the transmission range sensor (safety neutral switch) on my 2007 Odyssey, I have two strange problems.

    1) Cruse Control doesn't work - the light says it's turned on, but cruise won't activate. I've tried disconnecting the battery and fiddling wit the brake switch. The rest of the steering wheel controls work.
    2) The N neutral and D drive lights on the dash don't come on. P, R, 2, and 1 all work. When you are switching between the gears N and D briefly light up then stay off while actually in that gear.

Anybody have any ideas? I'm not a skilled mechanic, just a "That doesn't look to hard on youtube" kind of guy. Thanks for the help.

Two questions... 1) did you install it correctly and 2) is the new range sensor an OEM part of aftermarket?

With the cruise, there are two lights. One to say it's powered on and one to say it's active and holding a speed. Are you getting both lights or just the one that says you turned on the power switch?

My guess is the cruise won't work because it doesn't know what gear it's in. I think the cruise will turn off if you bump the shifter into neutral and that may be what it thinks you're doing and why it won't work. This is where a good scan tool comes in really handy. A professional scan tool will allow you to see the last 10 events that turned off the cruise control.

    1) I assume I did it correctly. Everything is back like it was before, just with the new part. 2) I bought the part from AutoZone.

Yes the powered on light works, but not the 2nd one to activate.

I am guessing you are correct that it doesn't know it's in drive. But it knows when it's in Park, Reverse, and 2nd or 1st gear. Just not neutral or drive. Which makes no sense to me. It drives fine when it's in drive, it's just not registering.

My first guess would be to attribute it to a junk aftermarket switch. Remove it, take it back, and get an OEM switch that you can trust. If the switch is made by Dorman, BWD (I call it Broken When Delivered,) or Duralast, you're lucky if it will work out of the box and even if it does it will probably barely last a year.

What was the original problem you had?

Sounds like it's installed correctly but the new switch just isn't making contact in N or D.

I'm so paranoid of aftermarket electrical stuff...

That's my guess. The aftermarket electrical stuff is hardly worth the trouble. It can send you off on a wild goose chase because you're sure the part you just replaced HAS to be good since it's new. It just has a problem internally. You might be able to return it and get another aftermarket that will work but, again, for how long. OEM only on this stuff.

Did you function check each gear on the range selector switch (the neutral safety switch) after installing (i.e. gear selector positioned in each gear on the column/dash and the correct corresponding dash light illuminates.).? There is a span adjustment on this switch and if I had to guess, you don't have it adjusted properly hence no "D", "N" and cruise.

That's very possible, and why I asked if it was installed correctly, but I'd still start out with a good switch...not the junk from Autozone. When you install it you're supposed to put the switch in the neutral position and put the shaft on the transmission in neutral. Then gently install the switch and put the bolts in loosely. Then put the lock washer and nut on and tighten down. Then tighten the hold down bolts. Once that's done you can connect the control lever and cable.

I experience the same issue. I replaced neutral safety switch (Honda part) for my 07 EXL Odyssey last weekend. After a few days, no lights on R, D, N on the dash. When I switch gears between N and D, the light briefly stays. There is no engine check signal. No code was detected with OBD tester. Do I have to re-install the neural safety switch?
It will be appreciated if any body solves this issue. Thanks.
