    2014 Middle Row Seat Belts

Our 2014T is the second Ody for us. It, like the previous one, has the hardest-to-use seat-belt attachments I have ever found in any car. They are "inboard" and buried in the seat surface. When someone sits ON the seat they are almost certainly sitting ON the attachment point. (Disconnecting the "center" belt...using the other part of the connector to do it...is just ridiculous...but we rarely use it, so...).

    So, here's the question:

Has anyone ever seen, purchased, or made, any kind of "extender" that could make it easier to attach the seatbelts once they are sitting....even if it makes the middle row seats look a bit "messy" with a loose belt or two. (My seriously aging Mother-In-Law requires another person to fasten her belt for her...and most everyone else complains and fusses when they try to attach the belts, too.)

    Thanks,

    jp

Seat belt extenders are available on Amazon. We bought one for the second row middle seat so our eldest daughter could buckle herself up while still in her booster seat. The one we got was OEM quality and looks factory correct, down to the tone of the colour (but obviously not OEM; Honda doesn't make them) and not very expensive. They also come in a variety of lengths and can be had with either a rigid or flexible extension.

Try a search term of "2014 Honda Odyssey seat belt extender".

Whatever you get, be sure its DOT approved to be on the safe side.

I called "Seat Belt Extender Pros" and asked them about their DOT Certification. They referred me to their page relating to safety and certification:

    https://www.seatbeltextenderpros.com/safety/

It DOES say their production facilities are DOT Certified...it does NOT, however say the extensions are. Apparently there are NO STANDARDS for extensions.

    So....there we have it.

We’ve used the short extenders to help our middle one buckle himself in his booster and it makes it quite a bit easier. Haven’t had a chance to crash test them though (knock on wood)

Even *if* there were a standard, DOT certifications are always self-certified by the manufacturers. In reality DOT standard means pretty much nothing.

We have been using extenders from Seat Belt Extender Pros for all our car seats. Seems to fit well in all of our cars. BTW if you were to order them I suggest you order the flexible ones. The rigid one really only works when the original seat belt bucket is also rigid.

I would go one step further and check with my insurance company to make sure your occupants are covered in case of a crash while using these. Seems like some insurance companies try to get out of paying by finding anything they can. I'd hate for you to get Into a bad situation and have the insurance company not cover something, also see what they recommend. Maybe also check with the department of your local sherrif that verifies correct child car seat installation to see if know any good manufacturers? Just a couple thoughts.
