Since the winter cold has invaded, I have noticed that my Ody shifts into Reverse rather hard. It does not do it when shifting into Drive. Once the vehicle has run for 5 or ten minutes, it's OK. Has anyone else noticed this on their Ody?

In the immortal (but this time true) words of your friendly neighborhood service manager: "They all do that. It's normal."

We were alarmed at it too, but it doesn't seem to have adversely affected the vehicle. In fact, I like to take advantage of the reverse "slam" to lay a little rubber in the driveway each morning. Rev it up to around 4000 rpm and then drop it into reverse. It's a heck of a lot of fun! And since we've all got an extended transmission warranty, why not take advantage of it and work that baby for all she's worth!!!

I do wait a minuye or two before putting it in reverse. I have to wait about 5 minutes before it shifts quietly. The RPMs are not excessive, maybe a few hundred higher than when it's warmed up. I am going to ask the dealer about it when I take it in for the 15K checkup.

Interesting.... I noticed it first on the day we bought ours after driving it home (around 20 miles). Obviously, everything was plenty warm. When I shifted from D to N to R, I heard the "clunk" or "pop" noise.

The only thing that kept me from worrying was the fact that another friend's day-old Ody made the same noise.

We noticed it the first winter. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the tranny. It was the end of the winter so we couldnt test to see if it was fixed. Lo and behold we saw the same problem the next winter. Took it back several times to show them the problem still existed. Of course they would wait til 11am before trying it even tho I brought it in the night before. Then they took me to another 2002 model and showed me it happened on that one too. Somehow I am supposed to feel better. They now tell me its the engine mount. They say it has fluid in it and when its cold it resonds with the clunk. Anyone else been fed this line??

Mines is a 2002 honda Odyssey and I have the same problem everytime Im ready to put it in reverse I have to put a little muscle to it but it goes in drive perfectly fine any suggestions why?? And it's warm outside but has been sitting for 2 years.

Try setting your parking brake before shifting to P.

When you are ready to drive again, press the foot brake, then release the parking brake, then shift out of P.

That procedure should make it easier to shift out of P. It also takes some pressure off your transmission.

^ What Dave said. In an automatic transmission there is a parking pawl that locks the transmission when the driver shifts the lever to P. All the weight of the vehicle now rests on that pawl. Using Dave's method puts the weight of the vehicle on the brakes instead of the transmission. Now you can shift out of P without having to use much effort, especially if you are parking on an incline.
