It started last fall the screen goes on and off, Now when I start the engine the screen reads "Software Downloading" then ends up with a message "Please Check Disk". Does this mean my GPS reach its end. I know if I'll have it replaced it will spell dollars. What do you think is wrong wit it. Is there still a cheaper fix for this?

Clean laser lens

Take out the NAV disk, remove the DVD drive from under the drivers seat. Take the lid off (a few screws) and clean the laser lens with a Qtip and alcohol. Fixed my NAV which kept stalling/going black. Took 20 minutes in all.

If none of the above work, go buy a GPS unit or use your smartphone with Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, etc. You have an 11 year old van. Times change. Things break. Probably easier and cheaper to give up on the 11 year old OEM hardware and get something more modern and useful.

Cheapest and easiest are not what we are looking for. Some of us enjoy to trouble shooting and fixing things. Having a forum like this gives us access to helpful folks with knowledge and skills. Many things are not as difficult to figure and repair as people think.

Best comment I've read all day!

If you read the original post, it asked for a cheaper fix and mentioned potential high cost. I gave an option that is likely going to be cheaper than a repair, with WAY better features than resurrecting an 11 year old system. Guess I'd just prefer 2016 technology and improvements developed over the last 11 years.

Hard to imagine the OP didn't realize he/she could plug in a Garmin or use their iPhone. I do think they were looking for a cheaper way to fix the installed system.

Either way, this post is a month old and the OP never returned for the suggested answers/solutions.

I agree that new tech is the way to go. We rarely use the GPS. Having young kids and living in area with many kids, I really appreciate having the back up camera, along with touch screen radio information/settings. This system does more than provide maps. We bought the van new and I hope to keep it for another 3 years. I also enjoy fixing things so......... We will figure out what is going on and fix this issue. I will not bring to the dealer to do. I do not think it is nessary with great resources like google and Odyclub. :)

I have this same issue in my 2005 ex-L. Screen comes on sometimes, sometimes not. Sometimes it’s updating. Sometimes it says check disc, sometimes it works fine, mostly it goes black screen. It also affects use of the backup camera. Even when it malfunctions the display kicks on when I press the open button to tell me to not use it as a cup tray or pinch my fingers. I’m wondering if it’s a dirty connector between the GPS drive and the screen itself. Has anyone been successful at fixing this? Please don’t reply with replace it with a Garmin or use your phone. That is not what I want to do.
