Engine ticking sound video. Valve adjustment needed?

Hi all, '05 touring with 79k miles. Runs ok however I am not sure if this sounds normal or I need to have the valves adjusted? Just changed plugs, oil and ATF and cleaned EGR Valve. I just purchased the Van last December. New to Honda and liking it. Please see video taken underneath the engine.

Thank you

Sounds to me like there might be a slight knocking. Does the sound disappear at around 2300 RPM? If so, might be your timing belt tensioner has seized. This allows the timing belt adjuster to knock against the seized tensioner. If this is it, the sound will gradually get worse until you think there are probably serious engine problems.

When the knocking on my engine got bad it did start throwing codes, but no misfires. I was getting the following:
12-1, 14-1, 16-1, 18-1 – These are all ABS codes for malfunction of the four wheel speed sensors.
83-1 – ECM/PCM Relation Malfunction
P0344 – Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Intermittent B1. This had three instances; under Transmission, Engine, and Global.
All these codes went away upon replacing the timing belt tensioner and stopping the knocking. I’m guessing that the knocking was causing so much interference that the computer wasn’t sure which codes to spit out. Of course, if you look at this thread (http://www.odyclub.com/forums/9-problems-concerns/268257-timing-belt-replacement-misfires.html), you will see that is when my misfires and the real problems began.

Good luck with the dealer! I try to stay away from them as much as possible. I have worked with four different HONDA dealer service departments for a few different problems (all under warranty). I can cite examples of how each of the four proved to be incompetent in servicing my HONDA vehicle.

I cancelled the dealership appointment this Saturday. I will take it to my well known shop instead. One more thing weird is I have been using 91 octane and threw codes since I used it. Then yesterday I filled 87 and ran smoother but still have the codes. I think I drove the Van around 45 miles already and the codes are still there. Anyways I will have everything checked to see what's wrong. Thank you all for your ideas.

You mentioned weird, couple things weird with mine. First that the problem appeared out of nowhere immediately following the timing belt change. Next is that even though I haven't fixed it yet (haven't even figured out the actual problem, how could I have fixed it), it was actually running better for a day. My wife called to ask what I did to fix it because it was back to normal. Told her that hadn't done anything yet. She didn't need to ask again, next day was back to misfiring. But why did it seem to magically correct itself for a day?

You say that the codes are still there, did you clear them or are you just waiting to see if they will clear themselves? That will probably take a few start/stop cycles with no problems detected.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Regarding the stored codes, I think that it depends on the code as to how many error-free start/stop cycles are required before the code clears and the CEL goes out. You can also disconnect the battery, but then you have to re-enter radio presets and such. I decided to buy a scan tool when i got tired of going to Advance to check/reset codes.

As for the power steering leak, forgot that I have that also. For a while, thought that I had a leaking crankshaft oil seal because of seeing a trail of oil coming out from bottom of the timing cover. Had a new oil seal ready to install when doing timing belt. Wasn't until removing the top engine cover and timing covers that discovered leak was actually coming from where hose fitting attaches to ps pump. Apparently this is another one of the common known problems with the Odys. I currently just have a paper towel absorbing the leaking fluid until I resolve the much more critical problem.

Sounds semi normal, the steady tick is injector pulses, there is an offset noise which i'd look into. I'd check plugs and make sure they are all tightened properly, EGR has little to do with it.
Valve adjustment not needed at given mileage but a check might be due

Check your spark plugs. Mine was ticking loudly from front bank. It turned out the three front plugs were lose. Tightening them reduced the tick. The rear bank plugs were ok.
I had someone come in from a different shop, their car was running really bad (Think subaru idle) and ALL the plugs were finger tight. LOL

91 Octane will not affect it but the fact you changed octane and it ran smoother, i'd double check the spark plugs. Lower octane will light off faster which means if you are experiencing an airleak from plugs, it would then run smoother since it can still compensate

My mechanic says to replace the mounts. He says the back mount is bad and I saw the engine moves while he put it on drive while parked and causes vibrations to throw random misfires?

The motor could be rolling around and bouncing on the floor and it won't cause that.
Mounts are a different issue. Random misfire can occur from improper plug torque, coil pack issue, grounding issue, alternator insufficient power, ECM issue or otherwise but having this occur from a bad motor mount? NOPE!

I totally agree with you. I told him I am holding off changing the mounts yet. I think it is a grounding issue. It rained here the past 2 days and left the Van outside. I noticed when I drove it it was totally fine without any vibrations or a little misfire. How do I check the grounds?
