Just ordered EX-L. Does anyone know whether and/or how easily daytime running lights could be added (like are required in Canada)?

I know I can just use the headlights and they will automatically turn off, but am just wondering about feasability of installing DRLs. Thanks.

Keeping headlights on is a different thing. All your instrument cluster and other illuminated controls will be dimmed, thus making them hard to see in the daylight (an oxymoron :) )

It is easy to adjust the Dash lights to the normal brightness without the headlights, just turn the dash dimmer (trip reset) to the brightest setting. I do that with my Accord and Odyssey both. My wife thinks the dash is a little bright at night that way, but I actually prefer bright over subtle for the instrument cluster...Just one person's opinion.

I actually dim my instrument lights to a very low level at night. My particular vehicle has red on black instumentation which is sometimes hard to read in the daytime - particularly with sunglasses.

My instruments don't dim when the headlights are turned on but the digital clock sure does! It keeps very accurate time but the display is totally washed out in the direct sunlight.

I noticed it has been awhile since a reply. Anyone figured out how to install or configure DRL yet to the US versions. That is one thing I like about the Sienna, the availability of DRL.

I'm with ya, I'm on the lookout for a fix to this also. I dont like leaving the lights on, I thought about installing one of the aftermarket modules but have been waiting for someone smarter than me to figure it out and post it here.:stupid:

I'll keep looking for now.

I suppose you could always leave the lights on AUTO and then put some black tape over the light sensor which is front part of the dash. You'd then have to use the dash dimmer dial to adjust for day & night driving.

EX-L does not have AUTO.

You wouldn't want to cover the light sensor. This is also used by the Climate Control system. When it is sunny and warm, the fan speed is higher than a cloudy warm day. The opposite is true for a cold day when the heat is on.

Perhaps but it's my understanding the climate control doesn't use it, only the few temp sensors mounted around the cabin.

Someone should research if DRL's are just a software revision or an extra fuse, rather than a whole different wiring setup for the Canadian models. On the Toyota's it's just an extra fuse you have to stick in the underhood panel.

*shrug*

Do not know if 05 is different, but prior models are very difficult to modify, not like some Fords and others. I installed fog lights and wired them so the can be turned on anytime the engine is running and essentially use them as DRL.

How is that done?

See page 198 of the manual, center column.

"The climate control system has three sensors. A sunlight sensor is in the top of the dashboard, and a temperature sensor is next to the steering column. There is also a rear sensor on the rear sidewall near the exhaust vent. Do not cover or spill any liquid on them."

Next time you have a warm, sunny day and the AC is blowing cold air at a high speed, cover the sensor for a bit. The fan speed will slow. This is because it interprets it as cloudy, and therefore, less solar heating in the car. Both my '99 Ody and '03 Pilot were this way (as is the Sub).

SEARCH and you'll find the answer. This modification has been around since at least 2001. While you're modifying the fog lights to work anytime, i.e., with parking lights and also with the high beams, you can also wire the headlamps to allow the low beams to stay on with the high beams.

Happy searching and modding,
Mel
