I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey and the last time I drove it the check engine light and TCS light came on. I read in the owners manual that it could be caused either by the fuel cap being loose - it wasn't - or an emissions problem. For a few weeks prior to these lights coming on I noticed that the car seems to jerk around a little but since it always happened when I was on a bumpy road, I thought not too much about it. I have looked at other web sites and see a lot of people have had transmission problems and that there is a recall on the EGR valve for my model. My main problem is that I bought the van when we were stationed in Montana and now we are stationed in England. Honda doesn't sell the Odyssey over here and not too many people are familiar with it or the American recalls. How do I know what the problem is? How much will is cost? Will Honda reimburse us if it is the recall problem? And how long will it take?

Me to

I bought a brand new '04. Driving it out of the lot, I saw the check engine and the TCS light both on. So, I just drove around the building for sales to service and dropped my brand new car off for service with ony 1 tenth of a mile on it. Then I walked back to sales and said: give me another one. And they did.

I remember they quickly tried to check the gas cap. I didn't follow the repair in detail, because they gave me a different car, but I seem to recall they changed the oxygen sensor to fix the problem. The oxygen sensor can fail, infant mortality in my case, and is easy to replace.

Try changing the oxygen sensor.

If the Check Engine light came on then a code was stored. Find someone to pull the code for you and you'll have an idea what the problem is. Any Honda dealer should be able to read the code. In the US I'd just go to an AutoZone since they'll read codes for free.

Swapping parts when you don't have a real good idea what the problem is can get pretty pricey very quickly.

Check Engine Lamp indicates a problem with the engine.

TCS lamp indicates a problem within the transmission.

Usually the case is that the motor has the problem and the same motor problem is "tripping" the TCS code, however it is possible the trans could have a problem tripping the check engine code, but if your vehicle drives normally then suspect the engine, however the only way to be sure is to retrieve the code(s) itself to find the problem.

With this information in mind, it is most likely we have a driveability problem such as engine misfire,EGR lift, Fuel Trims, etc..

EGR valve

I had the same problem with my 2003 Odyssey at about 21000 miles-- the check engine light came on, the TCS light came on (and then went off again), and I got a relatively severe stuttering/shuddering at freeway speeds with light acceleration only, and it was the EGR valve-- now replaced with a cure for the van's ills.

Re: EGR valve

I have had the Check Engine and TCS light come on four times now and every time it has been solved by cleaning the EGR port. Apparently due to a design flaw, the later Honda engines (including those on the Acura CL/TL/RL, etc) don't have a large enough port and tend to clog very easily.

I too had the CEL and TCS come up along with the engine and transmission shuddering. Came to find out that it was the rotary air control valve located underneath the throttle body. To check if it is your problem, take a screwdriver and rasp the handle up against the valve as your engine is running. Mine was revving close to 2000 rpm's and when I rasped it it fell down to around 700. Dealer charged me 85.00 for the part.

Just my two cents, I had also spent the morning or about two hours cleaning the intake manifold. Talk about carbon build up.

When I was driving to NJ this week end , half way check engine and TCS lige came on . This was noticed after I re-filled gas . So I pulled over and checked the fuel cap. It was ok .
(2001 EX , 38 k and is in HC warrenty ) . I took a chance and drove until NJ . Showed to one of the delear next day morning and he said they can look at it only on Monday . He said it is ok to drive if it is NOT blincking light . So I drove back y'day . I am planing to show it to my local dealer tomorrow .

Questions:
In HC warrenty , do they give sub vehicle when we drop off the Odyssey ? During warrenty , once when I called Honda for a problem , delear said they will give sub vehicle only if the problem can not be fixed same day .

Thanks
-Vincent

This seems to be the EGR valve problem. I had mine fixed for free. Check for a TSB on this, I know there is one.

Actually if the IACV is unplugged that light stays on too.
Does it have any idle problems?
Mvinkler,

we have a situation wherein the car runs fine but upon deceleration, right when we are almost at a complete stop, there is a slight surge in rpm's only about 100 rpm's max but it is noticeable enough that it pull's the car ever so slightly.

Any ideas???????
