Today the right ear(foam) piece separated from one of our head phone sets. It is dangling from a wire. It will not snap back on. This is only our second time using these!
Has this happened to anyone else?

I haven't experienced exactly this problem, but one of our headsets did have a broken battery door (it popped all the way off instead of staying attached as it's supposed to, and wouldn't stay on). Took it to the dealer and they told me they would have to order a replacement, which would be covered under warranty.

Anyway, a couple of weeks went by, and my original salesman called and told me that he'd sneak a set out of another '05 Ody that was for sale on the lot, which he did, saving me the hassle of waiting for the replacement to arrive.

The headphones do seem a little flimsy, and definitely not worth the $80 it costs to replace them once the warranty runs out.

Yes, this happened to us. My father in law was attempting to turn the headphones on and they broke.

I opened the headphones up and found there was a circular plastic piece which was broken. This plastic piece holds a screw in place (it acts as a washer). I used krazy glue to repair and it has held together fine. In retrospect, I probably should have spent the time to go buy a little metal washer, but we'll see how this holds up.

If you shake the headphones, you will probably hear the broken pieces rattling inside.

If it happens later, after the warranty is up, go to Best Buy and purchase the Audiovox IR Wireless Headphones. The work great, fit better, and seem more "substantial". They are also much less expensive at about $40 each.

Had the broken door problem as well; salesman installed the batteries for us and broke it. Waiting for a replacement one.

Compared to the headsets on my 2003, these are flimsier and sound worse (IMHO). But they fit little heads better and aren't as easy to turn on inadvertantly.

If it wasn't for Mochisushi's idea for the Best Buy Audiovox headphones, I wouldn't even thought about buying them. Thanks so much for your idea. I keep 1 extra headset in the car now. I'm thinking about another Audiovox headset. We had 8 people in my van this weekend and 4 of them were kids. My oldest 10 (sat in the 8th seat) was OK without the headset. Next time, I'll get one for her to use. BTW the Audiovox headphones are easy to use and will shut off themselves when not in use.

Really, I was not sure about that ! Do you know what logic they use for "not in use" ?

Thanks

gjay,
Thank you for crediting this idea to me, but unfortunately, I didn't find them. I believe it was sdeggo. After reading his post, I went out and confirmed that they work. I probably would have been to "chicken" to buy them on my own if it weren't for him.

alex,
I believe that the units will shut off automatically when they don't receive an IR signal for a certain amount of time...probably a couple minutes.

They work great and I think they fit on the younger kids' heads better than the Hondas. This is because they use the "donut" style of padding rather than the lightweight "foam" style. The padding grips around the little ones' ears better.

Actually, on mine it appears to be a matter of physics, when the headphones are on a head, the earcups rotate to fit over ears, and the headphones turn on. When you take them off, a spring or some other mechanism rotates the cups 90 degrees so that they lay flat. This also turns off the power.

So rotating the cup is the on/off switch. I think if someone were wearing them and no signal was being transmitted, they would probably still be on, but it's doubtful anyone would want to wear them without listening to anything (OK, I know, kids are unpredictable . . .)

If they do shut off in the absence of a signal, I guess I've just never left them on long enough to find out. But I do know that they'll turn on even when the car is off (and thus no IR signal), just by turning the ear cup as mentioned above.

Jason,
Sorry...I didn't make my statement very clear. I was discussing the Audiovox headphones and their ability to turn off automatically.

nope, rereading your post, you made it clear enough, this was user error on my part :)

I thought maybe there were different Ody headsets or something . . .

What about all this I've heard about 'surround sound' in the new Ody's headphones. Is using the Audivox headphones going to disable this feature?
I haven't tried them myself, but my guess is that they won't have the "surround sound". However, I also recall that somebody felt that this "feature" really wasn't that impressive. Anyway, these are for the kids and they are not watching anything that has very good surround sound effect.

Since Best Buy has a pretty generous return policy, I would try purchasing a pair and try them out for yourself. That's the best way to ensure that they work for your situation. If they don't work as well as you like, return them.

I don't see how the sound coming through the Audiovox headphones would be any different than that coming through the stock ones. I mean, the "surround sound" is simulated; all headphones have only two speakers, and surround sound requires many more channels. Unless there is some circuitry in the headphones themselves creating the simulated surround, it will be the same in any headphone. I believe this is the case because the mode controls for the "Personal Surround" system are accessed through the DVD control panel, not on the headphones themselves. Thus, the processing for this effect must be done before the sound is sent to the headphones.

I tested it with the Avia test DVD in my driveway and the engine off. The Honda's headphones indeed had surround (very slight) but I couldn't hear it at all with my "generic" IR headphones. However, remember surround before pro-logic 5.1? Honda's surround isn't even nearly as good as the four speaker surround. I was tempted to open the Honda headphones to see whether there's four speakers but decided against it. That's because only kids will be using the RES and even with ANC, it'll be in a moving car so I doubt even adults who care about surround will hear the full effect anyway.

I will keep this in mind for the future!

Thank God it's not just me...as we were driving from NY to Va last night, I found out the earpiece was separated from its base... I am glad it is still under warranty and I will call the dealer for replacement sometimes this week
