I was nearly a quart low after 2500 miles. Filled with castrol edge 0w20.

Anyone else seeing oil consumption in '18 Ody ? (my 05 ody used 0 oil over 10K mi change, my 01 s2000 drinks a quart every 1500).

I have 1,000 kms on our new van, but haven’t checked the level yet. Is there a dipstick or is it checked through the maintenance minder?

Only 2K miles on my '18, but not a drop of oil used. My '06 Accord and '09 Ody would go 8-9K between oil changes without using any oil.

Yes, this is what I expected with my '18. My 2005 Ody's oil was still full to the top of the dipstick when time came for an oil change. I am hoping that the original factory fill was low, and that i didn't burn the quart of oil, however not sure this is likely.

July 2017 manufacture, just discovered dipstick at very low end of range. 6000mi on odo.

Filled her up with 1qt of 0-20W, now stick right at max mark.

My VW, Audi, Volvo new cars all did the same, I just did not check until now as my brain was
conditioned on not dealing with it from many years of reliable Ody ownership, actually the 2011 also required a fill about 4mos into ownership.

This is why every time I refill the windshield wiper fluid I grab a rag or paper towel and put out dipstick, wipe off, reinsert, then look again. If oil added, never more than a quart at low mark, or half a qt. at mid-mark, always drive around neighborhood for a minute, then park and recheck. Always make sure engine is warm when checking oil level or you will be in for expensive repairs, overfilling will hurt the cat:)

My 2018 EXL is down 1 Quart at 2800 miles. When it was new I checked oil at 80 miles and found out the crankcase filler cap was missing and it was down 1/2 quart. Dealer gave me a crankcase cap and topped off the oil. This is the first car of the several brands I have owned since the 1980s that went through a quart of oil before scheduled maintenance.

I have a 2009 odyssey with the Variable Cylinder Management that consumes a quart every 1,200 miles.
When the car is driven at highway speeds and the ECO light is on (light engine load) it shuts off two cylinders
and saves gas- BUT it consumes engine oil that seems to be getting buy the compression rings and gets burned up.
That is where your oil is going if you have VCM. They sell devices to defeat the VCM and you won't burn any more oil,
but your gas mileage will drop 1 mpg when cruising under light load. So VCM saves gas but burns oil.

Yes, the oil consumption problem is strictly on Variable Cylinder Management engines as described in my previous post.
This has been a problem since purchase. No other vehicle I have ever had burned this much oil. Problem is not as noticeable
in city driving as you are usually using all cylinders. Most noticeable when driving on flat highways and engine shuts down two cylinders.. If you do not have a VCM engine, you will not have this particular problem. Any oil consumption would be from some other problem.

Do you do much highway driving?
I am considering a new 2019 Odyssey but not if they still have oil consumption problems with the
VCM. Dealers claim ignorance. They even consider my 1 qt every 1,200 miles to be "normal" according to Honda.
I don't. I know the new 2019s still have VCM but I haven't heard if excessive oil consumption is still a problem.
Anyone with a 2019 have excessive oil consumption please speak up.

No way, ours eats up about a quart per 20k miles, service also does their best to always fill up to the lowest level, they
may be conditioned to do this after the Civic and CR-V cold weather fuel in oil fiasco.

Not true!

I had a 2010 Odyssey with VCM, and it used exactly ZERO quarts of oil between changes every 5-7.5K miles, or once a year (whichever happened first).
Dipstick was at full fill before draining old oil. About 80% of driving was on the highways, with Eco/VCM engaged.
VCM does NOT consume oil, in and of itself.

Your engine may, or may not be, going through oil, but don't blame it on VCM.

a

P.S.: Only 500 miles on MY19, so too early to tell.

After putting 7,000 miles on my brand new 2019 Ody Elite, I checked the oil in preparation for the first service visit. To my surprise, nothing was registering on the dipstick. I added nearly 2 quarts of oil and it now shows normal levels. I can't believe this car burned 2 quarts of oil in the 6 months I've owned it. Getting the oil change this week and will report the oil losses. I suppose I need to start checking the oil once a month now.

This is pretty well documented and has gone to a class action lawsuit.
Honda extended the warranty on engine damage and spark plug fouling as part of a settlement on the matter.
I am sure there are exceptions, but many VCM engines have the problem. Perhaps yours had better rings or
they seated better. Honda has always maintained that oil consumption of up to one quart per thousand or so miles
is in their mind "normal".

I am still trying to find out if the 2019 Odysseys have oil consumption issues.

Just curious.

1. New 2019, 7000 miles. Down almost 2 quarts. Hard to believe Mfg. did not do the correct fill.

2. Brand new 2019, burn 2 qts. Also hard to believe.

3. Is it possible, you have a defective dipstick? (too short). Or did someone switch the oil dipstick with the tranny dipstick.

4. I'd do my own oil change, ASAP, and measure the amount of oil that comes out. You many have overfilled your engine by 2 qts.

5. Let us know what you discover. Thanks.

3 week old 2019 LX ... checked the oil prior to two long trips that racked up 5k miles. It was already in the middle of the dipstick zone, so I popped by the dealership to see if that was the normal level for a new vehicle. Basically, yes, they said. Along the journey, much mountain climbing, all seemed okay with the oil reading in the middle. Got home last night and found it down to the 1/4 level in the dipstick zone. Took it back to the dealer and they topped it off with less than a quart. They asked me to check back every other week to see if it goes any lower again. It definitely lost some oil in those 5k miles, but less than a quart, and on a brand new motor that is still seating in. I am not concerned yet, but will keep an eye on it. In other research, it is not uncommon for some oil loss in late model vehicles trying to maximize fuel efficiency. Also, I was not using ECON MODE as I did not like the way it felt in the mountains.

OK, more oil consumption data to share on my MY'19 Elite.
I now how 5,700 miles after a road trip down south, and the current oil dip-stick reading is 2/3rd full.

A few weeks after delivery, the oil level was just about hitting the "full" mark, so I am on track to consume full min-to-max range on the dipstick every 17K miles.
I actually do not know how much oil volume in the pan the dipstick's min-to-max marking range represents, so can not easily project this oil consumption level to quarts. But broadly speaking, this is as close to insignificant as it gets, and I am happy with it.

HTH,

2018 elite with 16,000 miles. Just took in the van for its third oil change after driving 6000 miles. The dip stick is down to the half way mark, this would be 1/2 a quart. I know it was at the full mark after the last oil change. This rate of oil consumption seems excessive, the last Toyota we owned didn't use any oil over similar milage. Are there any known service bulletins for 2018 Odyssey oil consumption?
