Bought a used 2006 Odyssey EX-L a couple of years ago. You guys have been unbelievably amazing in updates, maintenance, repairs, etc. One of the 'weak points' of the Odyssey seems to the be the transmission, so I immediately did a drain and fill on the transmission, drove a while, then did another - for a total of 4.

It's been about 6 months since the last one. The fluid is still a beautiful pink/red - but the plug seems to have a fair amount of 'sludge' on it. Almost like it was dipped in a pancake battery consistency of the stuff. So a moderately thick layer around it.

I cleaned it off, refilled the missing fluid, etc. Not much I can do about it if its more than normal, just curious. How much do you expect to see when you do a change?

Thanks!

I also used to see more crap on the plug than I liked.. Until I installed Magnefine inline filter. Now plug is clean. My guess is that all gunk is in filter now, will see when I get a new one. Will try to cut open old filter, see what's in there.

I just did the first drain and fill on my Accord since I bought it a couple days ago. It was pretty covered in gunk pretty close to what you're describing. I would also replace the trans filter soon as the 06 has a replacable one, the 07+ does not.

There was another thread about it a few weeks ago, I'll reply with it if I find it

Some gunk on the drain plug is normal.

The effectiveness of the magnetic drain plug decreases as gunk builds up on it. You may have to time your fluid service to keep the gunk buildup within moderation. You definitely want those ferrous particles removed from the ATF rather than continuing to float around in it.

Changing the trans fluid is not going to remove the sludge in the bottom of the pan. That said, the sludge in the bottom of the pan is not hurting anything as long as it stays in the bottom of the pan. Just don't turn your van upside down!
