Had the SAME PROBLEM recently - driver's side vents blowing HOT air; passenger side blowing COLD air. Couldn't be the Freon, RIGHT? Am getting cold air on passenger side. Looked into replacing the driver's side control motor (diverter). $450 repair. So... took it to a local family shop where he checked the Freon, but found only slightly low. He recycled/recharged the Freon and checked for leaks. Found no leaks, and it needed so little Freon he didn't charge me for any. I understand that it is good to have this Freon recycling done every couple of seasons to clean it. The guy charged me $50, and the driver's side air is ICE COLD again. LOVE my ODYSSEY!!

It's not done to clean it. It's done every so often to keep the system full. Low refrigerant means low oil circulation to the compressor since the refrigerant carries the oil. Low oil means compressor wear and eventual failure. Having it serviced and keeping it full means it stays full on oil, as well.

It depends what you mean by "hot". If it's heated air, then that sounds like the control motor. If it's just ambient air (neither heated nor cooled), then that could be low refrigerant.

I had this problem, replaced all 3 relays and had a shop evac/recharge the refrigerant. Guy said it was 10oz low, so he added dye to look for leaks. About $300 all in, and it worked perfect through the 1200+ mile drive to the east coast. Now, it's back at it. I looked at the condenser and wouldn't you know it - there's a green-ish oily residue all around where the refrigerant line connects to the condenser. Seems like I may have found my leak!

My 2006 was acting like that (hot on driver's side; cold on passenger side). I THOUGHT it was a bad A/C blend door that was not working on the driver's vents. However, with the help of this forum, before I ordered a replacement blend door I took it to a garage. I told him the problem and asked him to check the A/C for Freon first. He did. He re-cycled/cleaned the Freon, and said that it was just a little low (not enough to charge me). A/C was just fine after that. Cost me $50. Been driving this Odyssey for 6½ years. First problem with A/C.

Doubtful it's the mode control motors. It is very normal to have one side cool and one side warm when the system gets low.

If you've worked a manifold gauge set before you can do it yourself. Don't attempt to "top it off" as there is absolutely no way to know how much it needs. If you're going to do it the system needs to be empty, vacuum it down, and then charge it with 26.5 oz of refrigerant. Just make sure you don't introduce air to the system and don't overcharge it.
Should oil be added to the system when you vacuum and recharge?

That's kind of a tricky question. Oil is only removed when refrigerant is removed. Most of the big machines you find in shops will measure the oil removed when the refrigerant is removed and then you simply add that much back in when recharging. If you had a leak somewhere then a small amount of oil will also leak out and should be added back--usually less than an ounce but the service manual will list it. If the leak is very slow then very little oil leaks out. If you had a large leak/blow out then much more oil will be lost.

No oil is removed during vacuum procedure.
