Please Help.

This past Sunday after attending church my 2009 Odyssey's battery was dead so I had it jumped and I was able to drive it home with no issues. I placed the battery on a battery charger hoping that would work. After charging it over night I removed it from the charger and the van started with no issues. Come Tuesday I go to the store and on my drive home the battery light triggers along with a triangle shape w/ exclamation mark in it, VSA light and ABS Light also the van begins to sputter like its about to die. So Wednesday I buy a new battery and change it out myself. Van starts up and is running fine. One thing though, the battery light is still lit. I call my local dealership and they said to bring it in. Well come the next day I'm not able to do so because of the hurricane approaching Hawaii and all the dealerships are closed. Today as I was coming home from dropping my wife off at work those lights all show back up and the van starts to sputter violently. If anyone has insight into this I'd greatly appreciate it.

When the battery light is on it usually means the alternator is not charging. A bad alternator will show all kinds of odd stuff on these cars. Get a volt meter and check voltage on the terminals with the van off and then the van started. It should be a bit over 12v off and 13-14v started. If you find it's bad do yourself a favor and only get a Denso even if it's used. Aftermarket alternators are often junk.

Rapid clicking usually means the battery is to low to turn the engine over. Minimum is to charge it, may need a new battery but still need to check for voltage from the alternator while the engine is running.

My friend literally just went through this problem. It was the alternator.

Per other suggestions, get Denso. Also, save the time and take out everything in the path of the alternator. You'll waste more time and energy trying to go around stuff. And prop the hood up with a rope and NOT the metal bar, as it will be in your way the entire time. You can make it easier if a second person moves the serpentine tensioner out of the way, depending on your engine layout

Put a volt meter on the battery while the engine is running. You should have around 14 volts. If you have only battery voltage then you need a new alternator. This is likely the reason it was dead to begin with. Failing/failed alternators don't always turn on the battery light but the battery light means that the vehicle is running on battery power only, usually caused by a failed alternator.

As already mentioned, don't buy a parts house reman alternator. Buy a Denso reman. You can get them on RockAuto (if you're OK with waiting) or Advance Auto can get you one if you go in the store and ask. You can get them from the Honda dealer but they cost more. I'd pay the extra cost if you have to vs buying a parts house brand reman.

Sounds like exactly what happened when the alternator on our van failed. But with my luck it failed at midnight while my sister was at the drive-in trying to leave. That too on the 4th of July so I had to wait until almost 2am for a tow truck, got it to the dealer and had them replace it, luckily under a warranty my dad bought, but it sat there almost 2 days because of the holiday [emoji22]

Alternator on our 2003 odyssey went out a few months ago, same symptoms. Instrument cluster lights up like a Christmas tree. Car still started and ran but eventually it will die. Fun fact, your instrument cluster and all interior lights will go out before your car dies, so it looks and feels like your car is off but if you press the gas it still goes. Second fun Fact, our minivan can go about 170 miles on a brand new charge battery, And nonworking alternator before it dies. Changing and alternator takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours, DIY.

++Denso remanufactured, nothing less

OK, I know this thread is a bit old but I have a similar problem. Battery went dead after leaving the ignition switch on. I waited for the battery to self charge and after a few attempts it started. However, my happiness was short lived. The ABS and stabilizer lights are on, both the rear automatic doors will not open using the switch panel on the left side of the steering wheel, but will open via the pull handled when the engine is off. I also found that many of the setting options on the entertainment display console are not selectable. I had it to the garage today and their initial diagnostics didn't turn up anything so I will take it back Monday for deeper analysis. Anyone have an suggestions?

Try this. Disconnect the battery cables from the battery. Touch the two battery cables together (away from the battery terminals) for a minute or two. Then reconnect the battery cables to the battery.
