The door has three points of contact:

1. The bottom rail - there could be something stuck in there. Actually, that's probably most likely since it's the biggest gap.

2. The middle rail under the rear window, where the cable goes that actually pulls the door.

3. The top rail.

Check all three, especially at the point where the door stops. There must be an obstruction somewhere.

There is a latch that is supposed to catch if the window is down to prevent the door from opening all the way. Maybe that latch is broken and is getting in the way when it shouldn't.

Excellent - forgot about that! If the van is thinking the window is closed and it opens normally, that would certainly explain the banging noise.
I’d be very surprised if it turned out to be anything else.

I can’t open your photo but the middle bracket definitely should have rollers on it. Unfortunately they are plastic and their failure is a very common issue.

You need to take the cover off to check those rollers, the door should not move in and out any more than maybe a quarter of an inch. There's plenty of youtube videos on this. Basically one bolt behind the brake light, one on the opposite end and then the cover slides forward.

If you find them broken you can go the route below and save a few bucks. The Gen3 setup is similar to the Gen2 setup.
