My 2006 EX-L needs new engine. Does anyone have experience with JDM alternatives?
I found several 3.0L VCM engines, all claim to be direct swap to 3.5L. I would like to make sure it fits before I buy one.

My engine is 3.5L with VCM - J35A7. Japanese imports I found are 3.0L J30A.

Thank you for your tips.

I don't think the 3.0 and 3.5 are directly interchangeable?

If they are, that would be the first I've heard of that.

Even the VCM-1 and VCM-2 engines aren't directly interchangeable with each other.

jdm 3.0 is the equivalant to the 3.5. it fits. they don' have 3.5 in japan, only 3.0. It's the same way with subaru outbacks 2.5 to jdm 2.0 swaps. but there are somethings that need to be looked at carefully when swapping. Ihave done several jdm swaps and on a nissan i had to drilll and thread a motor mount bolt hole. on an outback 2.0 i had to swap use orignal intake and cam gears.

I think there was a thread here a while back about someone who swapped to a J30 and couldn't get it to run perfectly.

Interesting! Does using the JDM 3.0 require ECU replacement too, or it works with the existing ECU?

no ecu replacement.
Do those JDM 3.0 engines use VCM-1 as well? Where there is only 3 or 6 cylinder mode?

I thought that even the 2006 and 2007 US Odyssey engines, despite being the same engine, were not a straight swap since they had different connectors and wires due to the different transmission.

Not direct swap. Best to find a A6 motor, they are plenty out there.

Found the thread I mentioned before

I have done 5 here at work. no problems at all.
Have you had any codes for rich fueling - P0175 or P0172?
I just installed 3.0L in my odyssey and got codes P0175 and P0172 - system too rich bank 1 & 2.
Long term fuel trim is -15%, which is exactly the engine volume reduction from 3.5 to 3L.
I retrofitted harness, injectors etc. from the original 3.5 engine.
I have 2006 EX-L, original was 3.5L VCM - J35A7. New engine is JDM 3.0L J30A
Thank you for any tips how to get the DTC away

The person in the thread I linked seems to have the exact same issue, not sure if they got it resolved.

Any updates on the 2005 odyssey engine swap. I’m trying to get one done ASAP. I want to get a transmission also. Engine has close to 300k. Too many issues with leaks and noise also trans slipping
Like mentioned before, it won't run right. Just look for the same engine you have, they are all over the place, just have to look.

I know those JDM engines look nice pricewise but they won't work.
